Chapter 1

There he is, in a crumbling hospital where villains had suddenly attacked. The top superhero, Pride is here. He would be able to fix everything. Kuro knows he should run, that his talent had almost crippled him already. But he keeps going deeper into the hospital. He helps disoriented people find the evacuation paths. He uses his talent to free victims from wreckage despite how it tore up his muscles. He limps along down the halls. The superspeed from his talent had wrecked his legs and now he could only stagger.

The fight had moved deeper into the building. Kuro follows the screams and the tremors from the one villain's explosion talent. He reached the cafeteria. His mom is here somewhere, trapped in the new epicenter of the fight. Kuro felt the explosions but couldn't see the villains due to the other one's invisibility talent. Kuro sees Pride, and Pride sees him. He couldn't have imagined how he looked, battered and limping, barely able to drag his failing body to the fight.

Pride uses his speed to clear the civilians away from the villains, but he is having trouble with keeping tack of invisible foes. The explosions are coming from different directions every time. Then the villains appear for a split second, farther away from Pride than expected. They pull a civilian woman out from under a table and the explosion villain holds his hand to her head, threatening to blow her apart. Pride is forced to back off.

Then Kuro saw the face of the hostage. It was his mom. Anger and determination well up inside of him. He needs to save his mom. His injured legs moved under their own power. He stumbles, then walks, then runs. His legs and arms were too beaten up but he needs to do something. He can't sit by and watch his mom die. His parents had done everything for him; they didn't sit by and watch him die so he had to do the same for them.

He had to use the last of his strength, the muscles in his ankles and feet weren't gone yet. His left arm is better than his right. As long as he still has one muscle fiber left he can't give up. In his heart he knows his destiny is to be a hero and this might be his only chance. He has to try, no matter the cost. He leaps into action. His ankles have almost given up. He hasn't. Kuro hits something sooner than expected. His punch contacts the invisible villain at full strength. The rest of the momentum sends him crashing into the villain holding his mom. The villain crashes to the ground under Kuro's weight and Kuro's mom falls free of his grip. An explosion almost sends Kuro blasted into the ceiling.

But it doesn't. He's miraculously in one piece. Then he sees it, Pride restraining the two villains. He must have thrown Kuro clear of the blast. Pride's face is covered in scapes and smoke but he's smiling. He won. Kuro gives a last smile to Pride before falling unconscious from overexertion and pain.

-----------------

Pride looks over at the kid. He really was something. His talent is powerful. He saved the other kid back in the hospital room when Pride himself hadn't even noticed the ceiling collapsing. And then he came back. He didn't have to, but the kid came back into the danger to help more people. It was irresponsibly reckless, yes but it was brave and honorable. He didn't just settle for saving one person, he tried to do all that he could. Pride was reminded of himself.

And then the boy engaged two villains on his own despite being badly hurt. He didn't give up and fought to the last even in a bad situation that had Pride himself backing off. He could learn something from this kid. He could be a top hero one day. Pride hopes the kid would pursue a hero career. When talking to him, it sounded like he admired heroes and wanted to be one. Pride would help that goal any way he could. He was already thinking about giving the kid a recommendation into a top hero school.

After securing the villains and leaving them to another hero that arrived, Pride goes to check on the boy and his mother. His mother is crying. Pride tries to comfort her. "Don't worry he'll be okay. We are in a hospital after all. Besides your son is amazing! He has the makings of a real hero!"

She cries more. "That's not it, Kuro used his talent. It tears apart his muscles and combined with his muscular dystrophy-" She sobs.

Pride understands now. Why Kuro was so obsessed with heroes. He has an amazing talent that he can't use without disabling himself. And yet he used it anyways. He used his power over and over. That's why he was so ripped up. He used every last bit of himself in that last attack. That selfless sacrifice, Pride knew that Kuro was worthy. Pride resolved to do anything for Kuro. He wouldn't let Kuro's talent and drive go to waste.
