Ember 013 [Starter]

-Location/Fair-

Ember was a bundle of squeals as they continued their way through the fair. The tiny chaser was almost buried in the large stuffed bear Iniko had won for her, and she seemed like she wouldn't have it any other way. In fact, the bear was so large and distracting, that it nearly got her run over as racers dashed by. Iniko had to grab her and drag her back out of the way, her startled yelp almost drowned in the sound of cheers.

Peering around, Iniko realized they had stumbled across part of a course that wound its way through the fair. He had heard people racing before, but he was more of a strength brute, not built for speed, so he didn't bother looking into it further. It seemed that Ember had come to the same conclusion, and a wicked grin spread across her face.

"Kommmaaa! Iniko showed off at the last game, you gotta show us what those long legs of yours are for!" Her three tails twitched in excitement, and she bounced up in the ruby and snow colored vay's face.

Iniko agreed with the little chaser. Koma hadn't fully had a moment to shine yet, and perhaps this might be the one. "Might be fun to show off a little, unless you don't want to of course."

There was a gleam in Koma’s eyes, this was his time to shine. His head perked right up at the words and his heart started racing. He was enthused by the idea, in fact, thrilled even as he enjoyed more than anything being in the limelight.

Racing against others on a track was not something he had ever tried before, but he was more than willing. He could already feel the adrenaline begin to pick up, shooting through his legs and almost sending him into a sprint if he didn’t know how to control himself. Though his inexperience on the field itself didn’t mean he couldn’t run and he wouldn’t let that intimidate him as he knew he could outrun most of them, for that he was confident. Even if he didn’t land first place, he was sure he could at least entertain.

Iniko and Ember could probably tell from the wide grin on his face that he was ecstatic for this and it made Ember roar out more of her excited squeals.

“That sounds like a ton of fun, actually.” He told the others while trying to conceal his excitement. He would need to keep that burst of energy for the race itself.

"Well come on then!" Iniko gestured to follow him. It should be pretty easy to follow the track to the beginning, and from there they could find out how to enter.

Ember was dancing in glee, practically bouncing on their paws as she ducked under and around the males. When they approached the booth where entrants were signing up, Iniko stopped them, and fiddled with Koma's hair again, pinning it up tightly so that it wouldn't get in the way while running.

"There, you'll be the most fashionable on the track too." Returning their attention to the booth, Iniko got Koma signed up for the next race, and helped him put on his number for the onlookers to see.

"Go Koma Go!" Ember was a bit ahead of the game, cheering before the race even started. It made Iniko snort with laughter as they led Koma to the starting line.

"We'll be here when you leave everyone in the dust." He winked and decided to continue his little flirt from earlier, leaning in to give the other runner a light peck on the cheek. "For luck."

“I won’t disappoint.” the ruby and snow runner replied in a chuckled. He probably would have blushed if it could even show through his dark red coat.

But their locked gaze couldn’t last any longer as Koma was then quickly led to the starting point; every participant was filtered out and tucked into a small, contained, but open aired box. The door for his small stall was sealed shut for the moment, but he had seen races before and knew that once it opened up he’d have to come out flying.

He could see the other racers and participants from the fair through the gaps within each cubicle, but he wasn’t focusing on them. He had his eyes on Iniko and Ember at a distance while they were watching him with utter enthusiasm. He could tell only because Ember was like a bouncy ball at this point, incapable of standing still. The crowd was rowdy and loud, but it didn’t seem to stop the blanketed puller and small chaser from keeping their place, perfect to see their friend in the race.

The stardust ruby runner focused back on the door, eagerly waiting for the last few seconds before it would open.

Blaring sounds counted down to three, two… one!

All doors blasted open at once, but Koma was the first to emerge. The sheer thrust he gave himself sent him soaring, a second too soon and he would have pelted the door but everything was timed perfectly and when his paws touched the ground he kept going, his speed unmatched.

At one point, the crowd was desperate to push forward to see even closer. At that point, Iniko grabbed the tiny chaser and her giant bear, tossing them on his back so she was guaranteed a high enough vantage point to see the race unfold.

It was tricky to keep her balanced as she continued to want to bounce on his back, but he managed, and the two of them lent their voices to the crowd. Koma was a natural. While the gates were often spooking or freezing even those who expected it, the ruby and snow runner showed no hesitation, leaping forward at just the right moment.

Those few precious seconds aided his run, making sure he kept ahead of the pack. The dirt being picked up on the track made Iniko nervous; should someone get ahead of Koma, they could get it in his eyes, which would screw him up big time. As others kept getting closer and closer to the ruby and snow colored runner, Iniko grew more nervous.

Koma deserved a win today, and he would hate it if the male didn't win this. Ember didn't share his worries though, cheering so loudly in his ears that the puller was worried that he might not have any hearing left after this.

The race was grueling but the racers were on par with each other. It wasn’t an easy one afterall, the other contestants were just as challenging and adrenaline fueled as Koma.

In the end he had managed to make it to second place, just milliseconds behind another runner that passed him at the last stretch to the finish line.

Yet, he was not disappointed. Panting, perhaps, and weary circles running deep below his eyes but if he could score any place at all he was content with that and with so close of a timing, he felt it was just as deserved. He worked hard nonetheless and knew it had kept many entertained, the crowd and cheers were well worth it too.

The contestants eventually spread and Koma at last reunited with Iniko and Ember, completely exhausted and tongue sticking out.

But before the two could say anything and before he could completely collapse, the ruby runner made sure to pluck his prize and show it to his friends.

“Look at what the second place has brought me!” He cheered between tired huffs while showing off  his goods.

Not only did he receive a nice shiny medal, but lots and lots of fair tickets.

“Ready for more challenges??” He taunted the others, with his pep crawling back.

END.
