The fire cackled and snapped as it's glowing yellow teeth gnawed at the bark and wood of the log it sat upon, the light it gave reflecting off of the objects nearby. Trees, bushes, grass... the log and the people that sat upon it. As crickets and frogs conducted their midnight symphonies, the illusionist's mind was on the woman that sat next to him.

Sea-foam green eyes locked onto her as he gently leaned his cheek against his hand, a small, amused smile on his face that reflected the same light that danced in his eyes. "What are you thinking of, love?"

Those mismatched eyes met his for only a moment, one brown and the other a milky blue, before he watched the side of her lip twitch into a half-smile. That familiar mischievous look flashed in her eyes, and he couldn't help but think it seemed to only look amplified with the fire's flickering light.

"I don't know, you tell me, Kil." She retorted with a smirk, causing the man at her side to huff in amusement.

"I'd imagine all of the hiking we'll be doing tomorrow?"

"No."

"Food?"

She shook her head.

"Mmm... How about our slow but upcoming future together?"

A spark flashed through her eyes and that's when he knew he had gotten the answer correct. Third time's a charm. A soft chuckle escaped his throat as she nodded thereafter, soon shuffling closer to lean her head against his shoulder.

"Still seems pretty far away, doesn't it?" He begged her.

"It does... But getting out of Dark Gears is necessary."

"Yes, I know... To Corgul. It still seems so far away, though."

"Mmm... the place may seem far away, but we'll get there soon. Hopefully with no further problems."

"Yes... The last thing we need is more drunken assassins on our tails. The last guy didn't get out of it well."

"Hey, he's the one who got into my personal space."

They both laughed then, and Killian ultimately rested his cheek against the top of the woman's head, eyes still staring into the fire. The sounds of the fire and the night were audible once more as the two grew silent... for a time.

Eventually, Killian spoke once more.

"I love you, Ryx."

He heard a soft huff. He didn't need to look at her to know she was smiling.

"I love you, too, Killian."
