[THE SETTING]

The Requiem Campaign took place in the year 2558. The conflict dated from February 7th to March 2nd, and ended with an indecisive outcome. Both Jul ‘Mdama’s Covenant and the UNSC Infinity held one half of the Janus Key. Regardless of outcome, the loss of Spartan-IV personnel was notable. Notable enough to hold the attention of The Office of Naval Intelligence’s top brass.

A meeting held between ONI officers resulted in one simple conclusion: The Spartan-IV program was not as lucrative as initially stated to be. However, The Spartan Operations branch is independent of ONI as announced by Musa Ghanem, Commander-in-Chief of The Spartans. Without the ability to create Spartan-IVs more akin to past Spartan generations, there was only one choice. To create a new generation of Spartans.

Rear Admiral Amaryllis Thorne only recently had been promoted to the rank of O-7. Prior to her current Beta-5 Division placement, Amaryllis Thorne led a Ferret Team composed of herself, Dereck-055, and Riley-072. Upon the Beta-5 Division’s responsibility of creating a modern Spartan program, Amaryllis Thorne was one of the more notable members of the division. With her came the visions of this new Spartan program, in which she titled the MYTHOS program.

Born in the month of April, the MYTHOS program began its development. Amaryllis Thorne served as the head of the Beta-5 Division from then on. The program was to be held on a refit Phoenix-class carrier named the ONI Mythos, and various personnel from the Navy were to be brought onboard. With the augmentation procedure of Project: EVERGREEN developing, what remained were the candidates for the MYTHOS program. In which, Thorne’s suggestion would be considered controversial within The Office of Naval Intelligence.

Her suggestion had been to repurpose the augmentations of Project: ORCHID to mitigate cost of resources, using Spartan-IVs as candidates and to create a truly successful iteration of the Spartan program with adult volunteers. Once more the issue of the Spartan Operation’s branch being independent would surface, but Thorne had a concept. To discreetly invite the best of the Spartan-IV program by having the volunteering candidates go on a "mission" and be marked as MIA. Within the MYTHOS program, each Spartan is only known by their alias, their real names only known to top brass in ONI. Only when Thorne agreed to test personal A.I. for the future of the Spartan programs was her concept greenlit.

In November of 2559, the MYTHOS program held 75 Spartan-IV candidates who are unaware of the secrecy behind the program. The MYTHOS program’s training regime lasted a full eight months, in which wash-outs would return to the Spartan-IV program, being unmarked as MIA. With the program being considered top secret, this would prevent the Spartan-IVs from revealing the program’s existence, unaware of the true nature behind the secrecy. The MYTHOS Program is left with 50 Spartans after the initial training course. In July of 2560, 50 Spartan-IV candidates underwent the Project: EVERGREEN augmentation procedures. Every Spartan successfully does so, and their training continues until March of 2561.

Graduating from the program, these 50 Spartans were no longer Spartan-IVs, but to be considered MYTHOS Spartans. Prepared for their first deployment, complications arise when the crew of the ONI Mythos encounter an unknown, hyper-aggressive alien race. Thorne is desperate to save her Spartans, disregarding the initial plans of their testing and beginning a long game of cat-and-mouse.

Failure is not an option. It’s no longer a question of if Thorne will crack under pressure, but when.
