Cats
Cats are the main protagonist of the world and are generally common but are well at hiding themselves. Their small size allows them to stay hidden and cool in the hot desert temperatures. They have a lower lifespan than before the pathogen but their increased intelligence, due to radiation, has adapted them to living in the wild. Their bites like before are still poisonous to people and many animals, just to a slightly greater extent.
They can often be found living in tight-knit groups of anywhere from seven - twenty. The groups themselves do not often fight and territories do overlap, but skirmishes do happen, especially over the scarce desert prey and other resources. Kittypets are rare as many humans do not have the resources to take care of pets that do not serve a functional purpose.
Barn cats are also not that common as they prefer to join clans rather than feed off of the scraps of humans.
Humans
The last remaining survivors of a deadly pathogen and nuclear fallout must now fight to survive in the new world. Many have opted to create villages to strive for a new life but others have created cults and others set up raids preying on travelers and the weak.
Humans generally fall into two groups, those that wish to return to the way things were before and those that embrace this new life. The people that wish to return set up farms and villages, sending out patrols into the wasteland to scavenge for resources. But others are not so keen on the old way of life becoming raiders or worshiping a strange unknown and unseen god. Not all of the deniers are like that though and many just want to explore and live a life free from capitalism and the responsibilities of the old world. They will find however that there are new even harsher duties.
