Shadows follows a shadow hunter named Shae who is sent on a high-profile mission to a city in New York state. Their mission is to hunt as many humans as they can, and to report back to their guild with the spoils when needed. The rules of this mission (and most other missions) are to keep relationships and communications with humans to a minimum. Usually, Shae is great at following the rules of their missions.

Shae sets out in this city ready to hunt and kill as many humans as they possibly can in hopes of bringing riches to their guild, but are stopped dead in their tracks when they meet Star on one of their stakeouts. Upon meeting them, Shae realizes that they have every single physical trait currently sought after in their home city. The only problem is, they don't think they can bring themself to kill them.

For the first time ever, Shae thinks they might break Shadow law to get to know Star more instead of killing them.
