The Kivalore Union used to be ruled by two Legendary Rulers, the dragon Pokémon Kinaflora and Atrocabyss. The people of Kivalore worshiped these rulers and lived under their peaceful reign.
Atrocabyss was the king of Destruction, war, trouble, and many other things, though he was kind at heart. He could cause great, destructive storms.
Kinaflora was the queen of Healing, kindness, flowers, love, hope, and many other things, though she was rather snappy. She could make many flowers and other plants grow at rapid speeds, restoring areas of the region that seemed dead. She and Atrocabyss combined their powers to balance the growth and destruction of the region.
One day, terrible things started happening to the people, and they all blamed it on Atrocabyss. Though he was the king of terrible things, he loved his people and would never use his powers to harm. Angered at the people, Kinaflora took up for Atrocabyss. Seeing her aggressive for the first time hit the people the wrong way. They turned against the rulers and chased them into hiding.
And then one day, a huge river started cutting through the two sides, dividing them. Kivera, the land that housed Kinafloras spirit, was still lush and green, but lacked the happiness. Zarlore, which housed Atrocabyss’s spirit, became cold and grey.
Neither of the lands had a name, they were just referred to as the land of Kinaflora/Atrocabyss
One year, a war broke out between the two sides for unrelated reasons- Two leaders had tried to take the place of Kinaflora and Atrocabyss, and separated the lands even further- Kiviran and Zarlus. They used to see each other as brothers, but they had a huge fight one day, and they both wanted to be the better one. Kiviran wanted everything- every inch of land, every flake of gold, and every blade of grass or speck of dirt. He didn't care if his people hated him, he wanted to dominate all other regions and become the ruler of everything. Zarlus was cold, intimidating, mysterious, highly intelligent, and wanted to be feared and respected by all, even legendary pokemon. He wanted to be considered the king of all regions.
So, the two tried to accomplish their goals- but they were unaware of the fact that they both wanted greatness. They found eachother out one day just as things were getting good, and fought yet again, this time with their pokemon. Kiviran's beloved Skarmory was severely injured by Zarlus's Corviknight, which made Kiviran finally snap. He declared war on Zarlore, and Zarlus eagerly awaited the first battle.
They fought many times in multiple locations, the worst being where Mudsdale Plains is today. Both regions were almost destroyed, and without Kinaflora to help, the people had to repair the region all bu themselves when the war was over.
Many things happened during the war- but the most important event were The Murders.
Zarlus's pet Liepard was a very clever one, capable of understanding human speech. She was also a Zarlorian Liepard, an extinct species* with dark-psychic typing. She could teleport to different locations and read minds, but no other liepards could understand human language, unless they read it in someone's mind. His clever kitty could also somehow turn invisible, a trait not seen in any other liepard of the time. He would send her to Kiviran's home to spy on him. One day, Kiviran found her, and killed her before she could defend herself, even creating a robe out of her fur to taunt Zarlus. Zarlus was extremely angry and upset over this, but he acted like he never cared about her. He invited Kiviran to a private dinner to "talk about their issues"- he planned to poison his food. But at their dinner, Kiviran could tell that the food was poisoned, and attacked Zarlus. Zarlus stabbed him through the throat. Still alive, Kiviran tried to fight, but was eventally stabbed over and over again before he died. He managed to stab Zarlus in the shoulder though. Feeling triumphat, Zarlus thought he was safe- but he was kidnapped by two guards Kiviran brought with him, taken to Kivera, and publically exicuted. Brutally. This lead to one last battle, and 90% of the soldiers battling died. This ended the war, but left a tension betwen the two sides
The region was in distress at first, scared because they had nobody to guide them. But they started to chose the strongest pokemon trainers to lead them, and they became the champions of the region, defending the region. At first there were 13 champions of the region, but over time they stopped being a group and protected their own towns. Soon they decided to adopt the idea of switching main champions every so often from battling the other champions, which developed the Champion Challenge, where every 4 years, a bunch of young trainers would battle the champions.
This lasted for a long while, until other regions decided to call the lesser champions "Gym Leaders", and the top 4 behind the main Champion the "Elite 4". Kivalore was the last region to do this. Alola, of course, didn't, since they had their own way of doing things.
The region proceded to develop, becomin more and more modern, until it became what it looks like today.
More recenty, but still a while back, something happened- one day, an unnaturally terrible storm occured, flooding the region- many people were traumatized, or lost their loved ones, or their own lives. The region was rebuilt once again. After that, nothing signifigant happened.
