yep! they can be decorated, same you could wear decoration

the hardness scale being referred to is called "Mohs Hardness Scale"
its an index on how easily a gem can get scratched, I use this mass list for referrencing a gemstones hardness -> gemsociety.org

Common Gems are anything ranking 5 or below.
     ex; Howlite ranks between a 3 - 3.5

When gemstones are on the line, like a 5 - 6 ranked gemstone, I'd say to take the mid, 5.5, and use that to rank it. So it would be an uncommon gem ranked at 5.5
  although Im not going to be aggressive on monitoring if you used the lower number to get a gemstone you really liked with a lower myo slot
    ex; Turquoise ranks between 5 - 6 but if you have a myo ticket of common and still wanted to use Turquoise, then you can count it as 5

Uncommon Gems are ranked 6-8
Rare Gems are ranked 9-10
there is no legendary gems as I thought it wouldnt be fair

I have some ideas in the future for things like animal tails, ears and horns but as of right now, no.

The Gemlees use Mohs Hardness Scale to determine the rarity trait. Lapis Lazuli, for example, scores from a 5 to a 6. I've been using the mid point, 5.5, when referring to gems with multiple possible scores but I'm more or less turning a blind eye to those discrepancies. So it's up to personal preference for now, though you can always find gems of similar luster in a lower hardness-category! /pos
