The World

This world is an alternate modern setting. As such it works very similar to our world, difference being that cities and locations have a fantasy-like asian touch - at least where this plays out. The nights are longer here, the average daytime spanning only around 6 hours, regardless of location on the globe. This phenomenom is yet unexplained, though more and more people link it to the rising number of Yokai everywhere.

Design Guide

Inhabitants of this world can wear regular clothes (shirt/pants) with a futuristic touch to them, which is widely spread within humans. Yokai tend to wear asian inspired outfits with their own twists to them (I will link examples later). This does not mean a yokai can't wear regular clothes or vice versa!

Inhabitants

Humans still exist, but they don't necessarily make up the majority of the population anymore. Since yokai can be very difficult to get a hold on, clear numbers cannot be established, but estimates say that at least half of the population has some sort of yokai blood flowing through their veins - no matter how thin. Yokai are common and some people are aware of their existence - or at least, aware of those yokai that want to be seen. They do not have to be based on Japanese folklore only, as other countries have their own spirits and ghosts. Half bloods exist as well, most commonly a cross of human and yokai, and they make up a surprisingly large number of the population. Generally, yokai with cute or pretty looks tend to be more accepted by the public. That being said, many yokai powers scare humans, and they tend to stay away as much as possible. As such there are whole districts inhabited by solely humans, and others that lean towards yokai. As per government law, every person has to have their species correctly named on their ID. Not everyone follows this rule though, and the market for fake IDs is booming.

War within the shadows

This war is something that no human should know about, but unfortunately sometimes get hurt in. Over the course of many years, yokai have started to form clans and groups. These groups do not have to be based on the type of yokai. If they are, it is deemed a more conservative approach. Most yokai tend to join groups that follow similar ideals, whereas others just blindly follow their chosen leader. Power is highly valued and weakness is frowned upon. As such, for weaker kinds of yokai, life can be difficult. There are, however, "neutral" organizations that focus on protecting those weaker individuals that do not wish to get involved in the fights. What are the yokai fighting over? The space on top of the food chain, of course. This includes the rights to essentially rule all dealings, illegal or legal, that yokai engage in. Sort of like a free pass to money and fame.
