Deartlets

Deartlets are the dominant intelligent species on Nectarine. They have lived on the planet for thousands of years, building up societies, cultures, and customs in almost every region of the world.

Day and Night
There are two main types of Deartlet. Noctum and Sanctum. Sanctum are smaller, have shorter tails, longer ears, lighter coloring, and are awake during the day. Noctum are large, with dark coloring, bigger beaks, long bodies, short ears, bright eyes, and are awake during the night. The two live together and create very efficient societies, where one group can work while the other sleeps. Crossbreeds between the two rarely happen, mostly because the two species are rarely awake at the same time.

Appearance
Deartlets are birdlike, bipedal creatures. They stand slightly angled, with their heads at an S-curve. They have large heads and eyes on the front of their faces. Their bodies are covered in feathers, and they have a mane-like covering running down their back to the tip of their tails. They generally have long, featherless legs, heavy chests, and long arms, but that varies based on clan. Deartlets have two back claws and three front claws. They are able to manipulate their environment easily with their front claws and beaks. Sanctum stands at around 3-4' tall and weighs 70-110 lbs, and Noctum stands at 4-5' tall and weighs 90-150 lbs, but this can also vary based on clan.

Reproduction
Deartlets mate for life. The mating season is in Frigus Rubrum, and eggs are laid during Flavo Orientem. Most often, there are two, but on rarer occasions there are 1 or 3. Once hatched, a baby is dependent on the mother for a year, then starts to learn how to care for itself. The mating season happens once every 4-5 years. After 4-5 years, the baby is more independent, and almost fully takes care of itself. By 7-9 years, they move out and start lives and families of their own. Deartlets live to be around 60 years old.

All other aspects, such as societal structure, customs, and clothing, vary by clan.
