Story and Lore
"The sands scatter across the desert sky..."
- THE SCORCHING AND BEYOND (0 - 2972 AS):
- THE CONCEPTION OF DRAGONS (Infinitely Long Ago): The world created the few and powerful dragons. They started with the SkyWings, which soon specialized to include the preliminary forms of SeaWings, RainWings, IceWings, SandWings, NightWings, and MudWings.
- THE SPLITTING OF THE CONTINENTS (-10 AS): Before the Scorching, dragons were few in number and scattered. Humans were the dominant life form and formed complex societies. Leading up to the Scorching, increased volcanic activities led to a shifting of the tectonic plates. Mountains sprang up and turned to volcanoes across Pangea. Pangea split into two large continents: Pyrrhia and Pantala; and numerous smaller continents, including the Anoli continent of Aurwen. Humans were ill-prepared to handle the heat and their societies failed to the armoured and airborne dragons. Pantala hosted SeaWings, RainWings, and MudWings, which evolved to BeetleWings and LeafWings. Aurwen included MudWings and SeaWings, which created ancestral AnoliWings.
- THE TIME OF DARKSTALKER (2972 AS - 3017 AS):
- BEFORE THE RULE OF BASSET (3017 AS - 5010 AS):
- After the threat of Darkstalker, AnoliWings grew more distant from the tribes, hybrids becoming less common. They were especially wary of the NightWings, SeaWings, and IceWings, possessing animus magic. They supported the SkyWings’ practice of killing animuses in the egg.
- EARTHQUAKE OF THE GREAT CANYON (4734 AS): Earthquakes rocked the planet and removed Aurwen even further from Pyrrhia and Pantala, although islands popped up providing the ability to fly between continents. As the plates shifted, the Canyons area was separated from the rest of the continent and proceeded to grow its canyon. A few dozen dragons suffered fatal injuries in the shift.
- THE RULE OF BASSET (5010 AS - 5030 AS [Arcs 1 + 2]):
- THE HIVEWING COUP (5030 AS - Present Day):
- NOTHING but the character cast has changed since Book 12. All reigning queens, territorial divides, and locations of main villains are the same, EXCEPT what is listed below. ANEMONE peacefully took the role of queen and works in tandem with her mother, CORAL.
- PLOT SUMMARY: Samsara, a young AnoliWing, gets captured by the SandWings on a mission to find out what the HiveWings have to do with the plot to take over the AnoliWing island. Along the way, she meets a SandWing who helps her escape and uncover the master plan of a SandWing and HiveWing noble, that doesn’t just have to do with the AnoliWings…
- CHARACTERS:
- HEARTH THE SANDWING is the son of Queen Thorn and Smolder. In this story he is probably close to 15-20 years old. Thorn has been the reigning queen and the SandWing Kingdom prospers. Hearth used to date Sibyl.
- ONYX THE SANDWING, half-sister of Hearth, is jealous that she cannot take the crown. The Eye of Onyx is still supporting Thorn as queen, and Onyx’s mangled leg makes it hard for her to fight. Any challenger would decimate her.
- SUNNY THE SAND/NIGHTWING, half-sister of Hearth (but not of Onyx technically) is busy at Jade Mountain. She has no plans to take the SandWing throne or have any children who can challenge Thorn (they would likely be so hybridized that the Eye wouldn’t consider them SandWings regardless.)
- SIBYL THE SANDWING is Hearth’s old lover. He plays three-card monte, a trick game, in the streets of the Scorpion Den and Thorn keeps throwing him into prison for it, but because she has fond feelings for him, it doesn’t last long (and he keeps escaping). This is where he meets Samsara.
- SAMSARA THE ANOLIWING is a vigilante who was denied her lifelong dream of becoming a palace guard by Willie. She is small and quiet. She spends time tracking down threats and killing them or bringing them to the palace. Queen Basset is aware of her, does not acknowledge her so she can keep doing her work, and does not try to stop her. Samsara is the main character.
- QUEEN BASSET THE ANOLIWING is the current elected queen of the AnoliWing tribe. She hasn’t ever met Sam, but she respects the little Anoli and quite wants to get to know her, but cannot for diplomatic reasons/agency. She is unaware Willie denied her request for guard training. She doesn’t do much diplomacy with Pyrrhian dragons, but she is on good terms with the MudWings, SandWings, and RainWings/NightWings.
- WILLIE THE ANOLIWING is the current head of guard. He and Basset are actively, secretly courting at the start of this era. What she doesn’t know is that he is in league with Hearth and the HiveWings. He plans on betraying the continent for power and doesn’t actually care for Basset. He despises Samsara.
- ARC THE SANDWING is a lieutenant of Hearth’s.
- STRYKER THE SANDWING is a nemesis of Hearth’s. He really just hates everyone, but he doesn’t trust Hearth. He is related to Blister. He assists Sibyl and Sam, begrudgingly.
- VENUS THE SKYWING is another prisoner.
