echo, the name given to the continent that the flittermice live upon, and the only landmass known to the people living on it. this is because echo is an impossibly large, ecologically diverse island that floats among the clouds rather than the oceans several thousand feet below it. though there is a rich and fantastical history upon it, flitterkind have not yet made the technological strides to explore beyond it. however, the day is fast approaching that they might.

more and more flittermice are abandoning tradition in favour of a life in perseverance, a city built on strict governing practices and scientific advances that promise prosperity. though the government's methods are not always sound, how can one argue with their results?

the answer is, of course, quite easily. for all the good it does, perseverance is a relatively young community. specifically, it's only centuries old in comparison to the surrounding aboriginal communities that have coexisted with each other in peace for thousands of years longer.

it is plain to see that its rapid development is putting a strain on both the environment and the people living in it. there is, after all, limited space to expand on a floating island. and what, pray tell, exists beyond the boundaries of their civilization?

people are scared of the unknown, ideological tensions are rising, and a war may be looming on the horizon. welcome to echo.

there are a few "main players", or factions to be aware of in this species. here's a quick overview in no particular order:

• city folk: citizens of perseverence. these flittermice can range from the veeryday working class, to celebrities, to government officials.
• country folk: agricultural and fishing communities set up on the outskirts of perserverence that provide the city with invaluable natural resources and food. most noteably, the fishing village of baywater.
• aboriginal folk: ancient peoples that prefer to live off the land a significant distance from perseverance. many originate from caves, but there are a few plains tribes as well. the second most populated city in echo is an aboriginal market town called tambara.
• vampires: a class of people with very specific dietary needs that differ from the typical fruit diet. they need this to live healthily. vampires that live in the city are a protected class, and are provided bags of donated blood every month. those that live outside perseverance typically feed off hunted wildlife, though a select few choose to feed off other flittermice.
• ferals: a subset of flittermice that live on the very edges of echo. though their bone structure differs, they are very close in genetic make up to their brethren in more populated areas. very little else is known about them, however, and many fear them.
