About

Katarina owns a small psychic readings shop in suburban Chicago with her wife. They life in the apartment upstairs, joined by two cats, Salem and Mercy. Kat was born and raised in a coven of witches in France in the mid 1700s, and was turned into a vampire during the French Revolution. At her shop, she markets the Americanized and modern-day interpretations of witchcraft -- tarot readings, fortune telling, palm reading, etc. In this way, she is able to help people, bless objects, and use her gifts without raising too many eyebrows. The shop is filled with kitschy merchandise to further give the appearance that it is simply a tourist attraction.

As she goes about her daily life, she is slowly trying to piece together the remnants of the coven she grew up in -- ripped apart in the 18th century by zealots, some members imprisoned, some killed, and some lucky enough to escape and hide. Rina has taken an interest in tracing back what little she has left back to people she escaped with, and possibly to find their descendents. She can commonly be seen on the floor of her office, surrounded by towering stacks of books and journals and periodical clippings, tearing out pages and arrangign them in a haphazard timeline-of-sorts.

Rina's powers can easily be misunderstood or underestimated. When it comes to witchcraft, all of the power they harness is focus-based, and Kat would strike anyone as just about the least focused person in the world. However, she's spent a long time honing her craft, and has mastered the art of modern magick. Her studies have now brought her into ancient magicks, which she is attempting to learn when she has free time.

Personality

Katarina is extremely blunt, and seems to forget at times that she is living in the modern world; she finds the "conveniences" of today's society to be tedious and wasteful. She also struggles to grasp that many apprentices in the witching world today were not brought up with magick-- most families dropped the subject matter generations ago, and many witches don't discover their magick until late into adolescence, or early adulthood. Because of this, Katarina often catches herself scolding or mocking apprentices for honest mistakes. All too often, Arabella has to take Katarina by the shoulders and re-align her focus.

Outwardly eccentric and uncaring, Rina often swings wildly from one century to the next with everything from her hair to her fashion choices to her choice of slang. She has heard talk in the waiting room of her shop that she is regarded as the "village crazy lady" of Chicago. Utterly pleased by this rumor, she strives to enforce the stereotype, putting on her full Hollywood-Hocus-Pocus witch act for some customers, and then being entirely civilized for the next. No two people who encounter her have the same experience, and she likes it that way-- she is utterly unpredictable to everyone except for Arabella, who has long known her ways, and somewhat considers this period of wild mindless eccentricity to be a sort of mid-life-crisis. Well, if immortals can have mid-life crises, anyway.

×Small, yappy dogs. Is fully convinced they are demonic entities.

×Driving. Absolutely abhors it, is all but terrified of heavy machinery.

×Anyone, man or woman, making any form of eye contact with any part of Arabella's existence. No looky. No touchy.

×Pretty much all modern food other than what she cooks at home. "When you come from a time and a place where food was REAL and made from REAL ingredients, it's hard to acquire a taste for this shit."

×Being cold. So many summers spent in New Orleans, Venezuela, Guadalajara, and yet they had settled in Chicago. WHY.

Trivia

Katarina was born a witch, and became a vampire when she was 19. Due to her abilities in magick, she has some advantages over other vampires, however she has encountered trouble over the years from underground political groups that believe hybrid magickal beings should not exist.

She is OBSESSED with Hollywood portrayals of witches and vampires. She has scoured every movie, TV show, music video, and book, fiction and nonfiction, ever curious what the human world sees when they thing of magickal beings. While some portrayals were obviously laughable, there are many that are thoroughly impressive and, if anything, make her question of the original writer was an immortal themselves.

She holds numerous degrees from universities around the world, mainly in Geaneology and History, but even some fun ones like Astronomy, Liberal Arts, and Lesbian Dance Theory.

As much as she hates modern food and it's "fakeiness", Katarina absolutely loves Taco Bell. She never really liked real Mexican food as it were, so Taco Bell feels like a decadent step up from that.

Although she identifies as gay, she has never loved or been attracted to anyone other than Arabella, so she isn't really entirely sure if she would be interested in men, given the chance.

 Arabella Mata [Wife ]

Katarina has known Arabella since the day that she was separated from her coven-- that being because Arabella's clan is the one that saved Katarina's life, took her in, and turned her into a vampire. The two started out as best friends, with Ara being Rina's mentor of sorts-- explaining how to feed, her new strengths and weaknesses, etc. They spent every moment together, knew everything about each other, but Ara's clan was not without its flaws.
Ara's "family" was an ancient lineage of vampires, where status was determined by age, and some of the higher-ups had some rather ancient values. It was decided that both Ara and Rina would be presented to the men of the clan, among other girls, to be chosen as wives. The night before their presentation, Ara came to Rina in tears and begged her to run away with her. Without hesitation, the two dashed into the wilderness, and spent the following decades exploring the world together, experiencing all of the pleasures of a lifetime and of many more to come.
Arabella, being much more level-headed and socially amicable, had worked her way to politics in the underground world of magickal beings, and maintained her position in Chicago. The two could not be more opposite of one another, and yet fit together as perfectly as ever.
