Japanese. On the topic of race though, truth be told, he feels resentful of his white American teammates from time to time, being related to a Hiroshima survivor and experiencing that trauma second-hand. Not enough that he actively hates them necessarily, just... A feeling that he shouldn't expect too much decency and understanding from them when it comes to racial issues.

... It's complicated.

He's never felt particularly close to his parents. They were shallow, emotionally-repressed people who may not have explicitly abused him verbally, but certainly set him up for a verbally and emotionally abusive relationship he ended up with as a young adult, with a woman he thought he loved and could trust, by inadvertently raising him to have no faith in himself, and to believe he didn't deserve basic decency and respect. His grandmother on the hand, the Hiroshma survivor previously mentioned, he adored for as long as she was alive. It's arguably because of her that he's ended up so gentle and kind despite his callous parents. She died when Nana was an older teen, and he is confident she's having a good time wherever she is now.

He's come to see the Red Cloaks as his new family, in many ways, as it functions as one. Maddie in particular is someone he's come to develop a strong fatherly affection for.

Nana is a taller-than-average, thin man with an unholy, massive mess of black hair with dyed streaks of varying shades of blue, that, when let down, reaches about his mid-back, and has a lot of thickness and volume to it. He normally keeps it up in a messy but stylish bun. He wears glasses, being nearsighted, and tends to dress in clothes that aren't particularly form-fitting.

Nana tends to be shy and modest, but lately, he's been coming quite a bit out of his shell, starting to realize his own strength and trust in it. Especially now that he has been appointed as a captain, he feels it's time for him to step up and assert himself, for the good of the soldiers he's taking care of... And he does see his platoon that way, as a group of people he's nurturing and training to be the best they can be, not just as soldiers to order around. Nana is definitely a nice, gentle person to his loved ones, but there is a frustration inside him that many people don't see coming. This really only comes out against people he's identified as enemies, of course, he isn't dangerous to his own men.

He's also HIGHLY intuitive to the point that he could be called an empath, in the real-world sense. He knows people better than people know people, and he's quick to accurately read a room. This makes him very good at navigating interrogations (even if he's got "other skills" he leans on more heavily for those) and social situations, as long as he isn't feeling a sort of anxiety about the situation - when he IS, he's more prone to reading things wrong, particularly reading malicious intent or negativity where there is none.

Nana is additionally a very mentally ill man, living with depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD and psychotic delusions (generally in the form of visual hallucinations*, and very occasionally auditory hallucinations), and he sort of wonders why he's struggling with all this because he doesn't feel he's had it "bad enough". But he's above-water with regards to all those issues, he is coping with them as healthily as he can and he's medicated for a couple things.

*For example, a visual hallucination he's experienced in the RP was the time he was looking at Malcolm Morne's body after Mason shot it dead. Even though Morne's face was frozen in a sort of neutral death gaze, Nana kept "seeing" the face blinking, twitching, smiling, or even shedding tears. It made him a little out-of-it at that "ceremony."

Tea, silence, night-time, cold weather - particular snow and high winds, travelling, adventuring, feeling useful to others, beating the shit out of Kalen (he REALLY likes this ❤️), living in service to others, setting things right wherever he can at least with his fellow Red Cloaks, and as far as people go, his favorites among his comrades are Mason, Carla, Maddie, Joe, Jess, Daag, Rook, Iris and Dale.

Hot weather, mirrors, apparently himself, selfishness, disrespect to Team Lagner, a number of bold, egregious behaviors in others he's identified as obnoxiously American, and needless cruelty.

Diligence, his love and caring nature for others, hardiness, physical strength, wisdom, intuition, intelligence, a basic selfless and sound moral compass, a strong sense of problem-solving and the sheer might of his willingness to take care of business no matter what, with no complaining.

He's not particularly graceful, he can be shy and a bit awkward on his worst days, mental illness fucking sucks, he's very violent to the opposition in the moment but he has a bad tendency to feel guilty for torturing or killing beings that he's talked to (he's fine, he knows he did the right thing LOGICALLY, he just needs to be reminded of why he did it sometimes so his hindbrain can catch up), and he's known to depend on the approval of others a lot for his sense of self-worth.

Nana's GMD gives him super-strength and enhanced endurance, as well as a lowered sense of feeling pain and injury in the moment. However, he feels that pain later. // The Kalen Series (Reddit Cloaks RP Subreddit)
