Myka Spalding

Myka is an only child from a small town in the middle of nowhere, Nevada. Myka grew up in a two-parent household, stay at home mother and contractor for a father. Her early childhood was rough, much that she doesn’t remember and some that lives forever in the back of her mind. Myka remembers being hungry: from preschool to high school, no extra snacks and rarely dinner on the table. It was fine, she remembers telling herself, she got breakfast and lunch at school if she could get to the cafeteria fast enough.

Myka’s father died just after she entered high school – “a workplace accident,” they said. Myka didn’t know if that was true, but she knew she had lost the man who had cared about her most – the person who had cared about her most. Myka’s mother had been emotionally absent to that point and at her father’s death, Myka’s mother devolved into such a deep depression that Myka wasn’t sure they’d both make it to her graduation. It took months, but eventually Myka’s mother came to and began to push Myka – join a club, a team, a friend group – and Myka resisted every request. She wasn’t sure if it was the grief for her father’s death or the hatred of the conformity of joining something, but Myka poured every ounce of her energy into avoiding group activities.

Months of persistence made Myka see her mother’s point. She had never wanted to play a sport, least of all exy, but it seemed the only extra curricular that she could put minimal effort into. Myka started as a goalie, the position requiring the least amount of effort and Myka put in no more than the bare minimum. This changed when Myka’s mother was diagnosed with cancer in her junior year – the one thing she had asked was to see Myka win a match. They lost every game that season but putting in the effort made Myka come to love and understand the sport. She began to make suggestions for plays and give her teammates pointers – goalies, after all, have the best view of an exy court. Eventually Myka worked her way in with the strikers on her team for a spring, then became a backliner the next fall. Her mother past shortly after her last high school game – a win for Myka’s team.

Myka couldn’t give up the sport in college – it was the only tie she still had left with her mother – and she took up the role of dealer in her sophomore year of college.
