Aletta Vancouver (Doctor Who AU)

Aletta was living her aimless life as a Starbucks barista when a strange man shows up in her apartment and kills a cop. The cop was an alien body snatcher, which then entered into the strange man, who told Aletta to shoot him with the harpoon gun he brought. She did. He burst into gold light and turned into someone else.

That's how she met the Doctor. At first suspicious of him, Aletta became infatuated with both the Time Lord and the new adventurous life she was leading. She felt special and capable for once, unafraid to explore the unknown and lend a helping hand to strangers.

After a year with the Doctor, it turns out that something devious had been mounting just beneath their noses, something woven into time itself. Aletta had been marked by a reality-eating alien since her birth, and now it was coming to collect. They defeat it, but not without a cost: Aletta is drawn into the rift that it created, landing her in an alternate reality where her parents are alive, and the Doctor is dead.

Aletta finds out that this new world is facing a cyberman apocalypse. She joins Torchwood, wanting to both defend the Earth and maybe find a way back home. Her parents are both taken from her all over again and she learns to use a gun, something her Doctor had never wanted.

She sees so much destruction and suffers so much pain. She also discovers a terrible secret--that she is part of a multi-universe plot to kill the Doctor by entities known as the Forever. Aletta is hardened, embittered, driven to desperation to wake up from this nightmare. When she does finally open the rift back home and gets the Doctor's help to save this reality, she is not the same person.

At the end, her feelings for the Doctor cannot be returned. In essence, she has lost everything, the thing driving her to survive and her sense of self. She knows that she is not even the woman that the Doctor was missing; so she doesn't struggle when the Forever wipe her memory to prevent her from telling the Doctor the truth.

Aletta wakes up in the TARDIS. The Doctor lies, saying it has only been seven months since they were separated, when it had been decades for him. She finds that in her absence, the Doctor had picked up a new companion. Aletta at first does not feel threatened, until it becomes clear that Luke doesn't plan on leaving, and that the Doctor looks at him differently than he looks at her.

Strange, unsettling half-memories and nightmares begin to plague her, and she is frightened when she has the impulse to pick up and shoot a gun. Feeling replaced and doomed to return to her empty human life, Aletta grows increasingly distant and sad, unwilling to get in the way of Luke or the Doctor, as this is their life together now. At the same time, the Forever draw ever closer, and she has to be there to keep the Doctor safe.
