Light grew up as the only child of a relatively poor tabaxi family. Her parents had to work nearly all day to make ends meet, resulting in Light being left home alone for long periods of time from an early age. An escapist urge often drew her out of the house, and she roamed the town often in search of various distractions. One day, she caught a performance from a relatively popular tabaxi band stopping in their hometown for a performance, sparking her interest in music, even if she was pretty sure she'd never have an instrument of her own to play.

Not having an instrument couldn't keep her from practicing her singing, though. She mostly practiced on an isolated segment of beach, so the wind and waves would prevent anyone else from hearing her.. At least, in theory. One day, fellow escapist Hawk would find her and eavesdrop in awe before introducing herself. The rest was history, and the two went on daring childhood adventures together whenever they possibly could. When Hawk learned of Light's family's financial situation, she began to support them by covertly stealing from her wealthy family. When they got a little older, Hawk gifted Light her first guitar, her most cherished possession.

Years later, when Hawk came to her one day in tears and explained that her parents intended to marry her off to some stranger in an attempt to reel her in and quell her rebellious streak, Light knew they had to leave, together. She explained what she could of the situation to her parents, and while they were sad to see her go, they understood her decision. Promising to visit, Light set off with Hawk, happy to sail the seas with her and continue their adventures together.

• Light was named for her bright yellow eyes, the "light" contrasting her dark coat.
