Doctor Enten
Doctor Enten Treecera is an ent working for the national hospital.
He's a well-known doctor for his success in the medical field, his research in cross-species immunology, and his innovations in vaccination. He's responsible for the discovery and charting of the way illnesses transmit between different sapient species and kickstarted many research projects to find a vaccine against them.
When he first started out, society was divided by species because of incompatibility of certain species as well as the notion that mixed-species societies were much more unhealthy than segregated societies. He migrated to the first nation that actively worked on allowing every single species to live within its borders. His goal was to find a better way for every culture to live together safely.
His success has only been noticeable in the past ten years. The population has been steadily getting more and more healthy, and many deadly transmittable diseases are losing the battle against his and his colleagues' cures over the past thirty years, but only now is he getting the recognition he deserves.
He's often seen with Dr. Amélie Colbert, a younger doctor and cherished colleague of his. She's a bright mind who can think out of the box, and Dr. Enten admires her for her openness towards his ideas.
- His little bird friend inhabits the hollow in his chest. It's always with him and despite hygiene regulations, doesn't seem to have had any effect at all onto Dr. Enten's patients.
Doctor Enten is a small ent, standing only 105cm or 3'5 tall when his roots are relaxed. He has a thick build, with wood spiraling around his torso and ending in a myriad of branches and roots. His body is entirely made from plant material, though unlike a tree, his core is alive and has a heart-like structure, a mammalian circulatory system, and a very basic digestive system. Right below his head, two arms stick out that end in large branch-like clawed hands. Initially, these arms are very short and have no elbow joint, only allowing for shoulder movement. These arms can however extend and grow up to three elbow joints whenever he wants them to. these elbows can bend in any direction. In his torso, he has a hollow in which his bird friend lives.
He has no neck and his head immediately follows his body. His face consists of two dots that look like they've been carved into his wood and a simple mouth that was very clearly drawn on. His mouth is always a smile and being drawn on, it doesn't move when he speaks. His eyes, on the other hand, are beady and can blink internally. Though he has no visible ears, he can still hear.
His foliage is attached to his head through many thinner branches extending from the top of his head. He has small, smooth green leaves. They seem to be very efficient at blocking their pores and defending themselves against the cold, as he doesn't lose them during the winter and he doesn't need to take root more during the summer.
Doctor Enten is usually naked, except when at work, where he wears a white labcoat with sleeves adjusted to his short arms.
When Andreas first was summoned to Haust, one of his first destinations was quarantine at Dr. Enten's office to vaccinate him against some of the more prominent illnesses of Haustian species and to check him for potential Hell-exclusive illnesses. Enten deemed him to be a very interesting patient and still regularly works together with him to chart demons' immunology and Hell's micro-organisms.
He's a fairly young ent, but because ents live longer than most species, he has seen more in a shorter span of time than most other people.
When asked about his 'face', he simply says it's "drawn on". He doesn't specify who drew it on.
For as long as people can remember, his bird friend has been with him. It's generally accepted that the bird is some type of familiar and not an actual bird.
He started his quest for proper vaccines and knowledge about disease transmission because he was unhappy with the hygiene precautions in the medical field. Doctors generally only worked with creatures of the same species, which led to a stark shortage of doctors for some of the more rare species. Species that lived segregated from all other societies had very little chance to migrate to mixed species cities because there simply was no decent healthcare provided for them.
He wasn't the one who initially pushed for medical school to teach their doctors about all species, but he was a supporter of the doctor who was. Thanks to the push's efforts, there now are different types of degrees for graduating doctors. Each species has their own certification, and doctors have to score at least three main species' certification to graduate. Doctor Enten has 29.
He has appeared in multiple TV shows, the most prominent self-produced show titled "Lifegiving", a slice of life show where he's followed as he carries out his day-to-day tasks around the hospital.
New parents won't leave his hospital until they have signed a legal agreement to vaccinate their children for everything unless they experience complications or an adverse effect against the components.
His voice is the most average, standard male voice you could imagine. It comes from within his trunk but doesn't sound muffled.
His roots can for a short amount of time tangle together into one to four legs, allowing him to walk. When he doesn't do this, he can still use his roots to crawl over the floor. Think how an octopus would move outside of water.
Because his roots can only shape into legs for a short time, he has an edjustable table which he sits upon when he needs to work at a height. He can also use it to drive around the hospital. All of the ORs have adjustable tables that can go all the way down to ground level.
His roots are covered by branches and can root in earth to let him drink. He can also get the necessary water and nutrients from food.
When his arms reach their full length and are stretched out, they each reach a length of 4 meters. He can give very good hugs.
