What’s wrong with my art/commissions?

Posted 13 days, 21 hours ago by merucetamol

Hi hi hello I’ve had commissions open for some years now and I used to take point commissions when I was younger on dA.

Back then it seemed like a lot of people wanted my art(tbf I was in the sonic fandom as opposed to me now not being in any specific fandom) but nowadays I struggle to get commissions. Some of it is because of the things I’m uncomfortable drawing, which I’m fine with, and others maybe because I still have things to improve on.

I’m also aware my style doesn’t seem to fit into any specific category of art(if you think there is one pls tell me!) and I know some people prefer definite set styles, ie anime, semi realism, realism, etc.

My commission links are here, please have a look thru them if u have a moment and lmk your thoughts. Constructive criticism welcome, just be polite and kind, even if it is negative.

honestly, i dont see why you arent! you have beautiful art. im sure youve heard the obvious "oh the art market is overblown," thats because it really is. especially here. a raffle leading into commissions may be beneficial to get yourself out there?
i believe your style fits into a stylized semi-realism category as well!

Fandoms can boost sale sometimes, but it’s like honee say really.

There is nothing wrong with your art style I quite like it, your style would probably be on the popular side if I had to guess. But I would not commission only because most of the characters I buy art of, are on your don't draw list. (Couple art, anthro’s, demons and witches). And I avoid if there is no mention of turnaround time, as I like to have an idea of when it is possible to be finished or a deadline before I commission. As it makes me feel safe about the commission.

Edit: Btw it can be just on my tablet, but some of your commission (TH post) examples seems to be broken. Agian, could just be on my device as it’s on the old side.

you have very limited commissions. furries are bigger on toyhouse as costumers than human oc owners so not drawing furries is a huge hit, people may avoid you for prefering straight pairings, many human characters are demons or angels of some kind etc. you basically have a very small niche and while you art is nice, theres plenty of art out there which is also nice and doesnt have that many limitations on what you can buy. the market is already tough for people with a bigger range of what they can do, you'll always have more difficulty than others to get commissions, especially as you dont have a high fanbase or an extremely standout name

saltprism

absolutely love your art style and pricing so I don't think that's a problem.
your advertisement post has a lot of broken images so until that's fixed it does make it look messy and uncared for. easy fix though!
BUT
as others have said, your Won't Draw list is off-putting and would keep me from even wanting to ask if you'd draw my characters.
my favorite oc pairing is straight-presenting, but would they be straight enough for you? is my female mage considered a witch? idk. don't really feel like finding out either.
it's not worth my time when I can go to another artist who I know will draw my OCs instead of sending them to you in hopes that you might accept them.

Thanks for your input! I think a bit part of the issue is what others have been commenting, about what I’m not comfortable drawing which I understand is a big thing.

I’ll keep trying but I doubt I’ll get much more joy than I have been getting :”) thanks for your encouragement tho!

Thanks for commenting! I’m glad you like my style :) and yeah I’m aware of my won’t draw list being not really what people want to see 😭

I don’t include a TAT currently bc my health really affects my life and sometimes I can finish a commission/owed art very fast but others it will take me some time :”)

I think I need to work on a specific part of my art so that that’s what people know I’m offering. I know some people are “known” for doing couple art, illustrations, anthros and etc.

I’ll keep trying my best, but thanks again for your input!

(Thanks for letting me know about the post, on some of my devices they appear fine but others they don’t. I’ll sort it out as soon as I can :) )

Thanks for commenting! Yes it’s unfortunate my style and what I feel comfortable to draw is a bit more niche so I appreciate that people can just go to others for it.

But unfortunately the things I’m not comfortable drawing are for a reason and they won’t change so I’ll just keep trying my best.

I appreciate your comment!!

Thank you for commenting :))

I’m considering removing that part and just saying no couples at all, I’m just not really comfortable drawing romantic relationships, even for my own ocs :”(

But thanks for being honest I appreciate it!

Thanks for commenting and for your honesty!

I do need to fix my th post thank u for pointing it out!

I understand about not knowing and not wanting to ask! I suppose then I’m better suited to someone who doesn’t want those kinds of ocs drawn so they don’t have that issue from the get go. I’ll keep trying my best but I think I have a better picture now and more realistic mindset for the future of my comms :))

Thanks for your input! I appreciate it!!

Don’t feel bad about it! Or I hope you don’t, it’s good to have a “Do & don‘t draw” list. I can’t imagine drawing something I don’t feel comfortable with, as I don’t think the result or experience would be good for either me or a commmissioner.

It is certainly not bad to have a niche (Unsure if it was called that), it’s good to have something specific people know you for. This is often how I remember artists, either a very unique style like jcorbari (TH), or timed illustrations like Pepperly (TH), or pixelart with backgrounds like sarurun (TH), just how I remember these artist’s. There is a ton you can try, like you say it could be anything. Colorful bust’s, drawing more diversity in bodies, amazing communication, ponies, and so on.

But you are welcome, and I apologize for the longer comment.

It's a little nitpicky but I personally think you have too much text around important information. I understand like maybe that's just how you are as a person like wanting to explain yourself and be open and honest with customers but I don't think you should be doing that on the sheet. You're free to tell them any explanantions if they ask or if you see a problem with the char they have later when youve already drawn them into wanting a commission. Not that you should exclude all of it just maybe revise ?

A few examples are in your will/won't do list. Nsfw is included in anything 18+ so prob just state anything 18+. Any the demonic/angelic list can just include it all in one bullet point the rest just makes it feel crowded and like you have more that you can't draw than can.

The note that the extra char costs +50% isn't drawing enough attention or isn't obvious enough in the tos because it's so cluttered. Try to keep everything short and easy to read/understand. Like your first bullet point was fine then there's a long line after that. I ain't reading all that all I see is "payment after sketch/lineart"

The line after that is important but you can shorten it and make it look less unappealing instead of being like I don't know when I'll get it done but I can try to update you. It can be more firm and optimistic like "I take my time with commissions due to my mental health however I will definitely update you". Anyways my point is that there's a lot of stuff you could reword better.

The terms at the bottom and the terms at the top should be merged pls. Also put your art at the top to draw people in because I agree that your art is gorgeous and I could probably ignore everything else if really wanted to comm you. So yea most of this stuff j bothered me a lil so sorry if I seemed like I'm tryna be mean.

Anyways these are just suggestions so good luck w your comms.
