" War will never cease. Reasons can be thought up in hindsight, but our nature is to pursue strife. Dominance. Power. "
Lao Jiang - the rogue king
Yanluo is a soldier turned mercenary with the goal of seeing the corrupt Zhou empire fall. With the help of a priest who's aligned himself with a slew of dark spirits, he uses his newfound power to achieve dominance in battle and success through popular influence. He's on his way to making himself into an unstoppable force, but he'll draw the ire of the Emperor soon enough. All according to plan.
intense + indulgent + possessive
Yanluo is an unrepentant, war-mongering ass. Once realizing that violence was the only way to make the world he wants to see, he leaned into it without remorse. After all, he’s a former military dog with no illusions of grandeur. He knows exactly where he came from.

The memory of slums and constant focus on survival sits in the back of his mind like a festering wound, and he does his damndest to ignore it by indulging in luxury whenever he’s able nowadays. And when he doesn’t, he utilizes his brutally efficient guerilla tactics to slowly chip away at the Emperor’s forces and influence on fringe towns and provinces.

He’s charismatic with a surprising moral compass, meaning that he has his limits and does his best to instill it into his own rogue battalion. This allows him to keep cast-offs with similar standards to himself, but doesn’t endear him to the corrupt individuals stuffing the Emperor’s forces.

The one thing he can understand, better than anyone really, is how individualistic they all are —both him, other rogue bands, and the Emperor’s lords. They all want the same thing, and it makes it that much more simple to tear down his opposition.

his childhood.
After growing up in the lawless slums, he jumped on the chance to be recruited into one of the local lords' military. It wasn't anything it claimed to be; in some ways, he was even worse off than if he decided to fade into the obscurity of poverty.

But becoming an attack-dog taught him a few vital lessons about might making right. And it gave him a way to ensure no one could ever break him down again.
his present.
After defecting from the Emperor's forces, he's taken to building up his own forces with other disillusioned, but talented individuals. He's gone around dethroning multiple unsavory lords, and has uncovered a network of unsavory practices that implicates nearly all the lords in the land. Even though he suspected as much, even now a part of him wished he was proven wrong.

Some of Yanluo's forces speak of making a home of their own, away from the impoverished hell that the majority of the empire suffers under. He's not sure how much he subscribes to the idea of this nebulous utopia, but his loyalty is to the forces he's created, and he won't abandon them now. He awards loyalty with loyalty.

Now his thoughts are being consumed by a particularly fiesty spy who refuses to join his ranks. Yanluo has a hunch he'll be able to wear down Xia soon enough.
his future.
His priest prophesizes that his reign will be consumed by the flames of hell.

Let them come.
" No matter how pathetic the reason, it's enough to start a war. Because it's never the true reason. "
Xia's a hissy little spy that Yanluo's had the pleasure of aquainting with, more than once. Or twice. Or more than he can count, at this stage. Xia gets the drop on him everytime, which Yanluo sees as a testament to the spy's skill. Yanluo thinks that he can wear down Xia in time, but he's noticed how cagey the spy is around his priest...
Xian Zhao is the priest of Yanluo's growing mercenary group. Of what little Xian Zhao was willing to share with Yanluo, the priest must've done some hellish shit to get kicked out of his former temple. All the better for Yanluo's needs, especially considering Xian Zhao's ability to draw power from the darker forces of the world. Yanluo's not dumb though; Xian Zhao's soulless eyes are a reminder to keep the priest at arms' length.
Xuanwu the closest thing Yanluo has to a brother. They've been together since their early enlistment days, and Xuanwu soon followed Yanluo when he realized that Yanluo defected. Though once a third son to a lord with middling influence, he's always told Yanluo that his loyalty lies with the brother of his heart. Xuanwu's always been sentimental.
Ao Guang is one of Yanluo's former flames, which is something that Yanluo and they go to great lengths to keep from Xuanwu. Yanluo freely stopped pursuing the Madame once Xuanwu started showing interest, and every once in a while Ao Guang silently threatens Yanluo to keep his mouth shut. When they aren't jeering at each other, they enjoy getting wildly drunk in the towns they go through. They freely enable each other.
