Occupation Mailman

Loyal ✦ Caring ✦ Emotional ✦ Irritable✦ Reclusive

At first, Mathieu seems like a brooding, intimidating person. They have a very stoic demeanor, and come off as hostile or closed off when they speak. Their mischievous streak does not help them appear more welcoming: rebellious at heart, they enjoy tricks and pranks. Mathieu is quite impulsive, and keeps his old tendencies to live only for the present, sometimes forgetting about the consequences. However, when they find something or someone they care alot about, they are incredibly strong-willed, and will let nothing get in their way. Very diligent when it comes to their job, as it is one of the most important things to them, and the only place where they do not argue with authority. Well, that and the council, of course.

Under an intimidating exterior hides a very sensitive and emotional person. Mathieu denies the fact, but when alone, he lets himself be touched by very little things. They especially love the urban life and the little things people create to make life easier. They are easily startled and will shout and argue to hide it, but is truly a devoted and attentive friend once you go past the façade.

I, the undersigned, hereby agree to follow the charter of walpurgis and all rules therein:

Area of Expertise

Working in a court, ancestor's of Mathieu's have strong ties to the wind. They learned to coax and tame different types of winds to ride them, or do their bidding.

Abilities

Wind taming: Mathieu can ask the wind into carrying them further faster, or blowing in a certain direction. Small winds delight in lifting them if they cannot reach anything, or to make sure an express letter gets blown directly in the mailbox if Mathieu is in a hurry

Words on the wind: Mathieu can send short messages by whispering it through a summoned breeze. They cannot travel extremely far, as winds tend to get distracted and forget their target or parts of the message.

The wind is turning: When crossed, Mathieu can create small curses by making the wind turn. It is basically a bad luck curse: milk curdling, moths eating one’s clothes, necklaces tied in a clump.

Size modification: Pixies having to hide in different environments have the ability to vary their size. Mathieu can vary their size from 4 feet to 6 inches. They tend to stay at their regular 3'6''.

Camouflage: Pixies have a natural ease at blending in with their environment to hide from humans and more dangerous creatures. By staying very still, pixies can meld with their environment, like a chameleon. However, they must consciously hide in order for their ability to activate.

Magical blood: Pixies are fae, and magic has been in their blood for generations. They are attuned to magic, and can detect it's presence in the environment. It manifests as a gut feeling, but they have no other details. The closer they get to the source, the more they feel it. Since they are not high fae, Mathieu can only detect basic or very ''in your face'' magic in a radius of 4 meters. Subtler enchantments or magic purposefully hidden will not be picked up. Pixies must consciously try and look for it do detect it, but they naturally feel strong shifts in magic as a defense mechanism. Mathieu has a hard time guessing what school or type of magic it is, since they are not very educated on the subject.

Limitations

Eye for an eye: Calling the wind is not free: fae have a history of trading, and that goes without saying for pixies. Small favours do not need payment, but curses and long jobs do. Mathieu needs to make regular offerings, or risk having their calls unanswered.

The wind does not rise: Mathieu’s own fear of heights bleeds into their manipulation of the wind, and they cannot summon very strong or violent winds.

Wing atrophy: Mathieu's wings are not used very much for long trips, and thus are not very strong. He cannot carry anyone flying, and tends to hover. He does not go much higher than 5 meters off the ground.

One size does not fit all: Shrinking is easy enough for Mathieu to handle, but growing takes alot of energy. If they are too tired, or have used too much magic, they will not be able to grow again until they rest.

Familiar

Mathieu is accompanied by a horned atlas beetle named Wuther. He was part of the last litter they took care of, and both grew attached to one another. Wuther is often seen accompanying messages on the breeze so they don't get lost by silly wims of the wind when Mathieu can't fly high. He is also attuned to the weather, and can predict it.

History

Mathieu is a pixie from a Summer court who left his own to find a purpose not impeded by their fear of heights.

Early Life

Mathieu was born in a very big pixie family. Being one of the youngest, they got used to a bumbling family life: the teasing and roughhousing was part of everyday life as well as a lot of love and affection. Mathieu’s family was part of a long tradition of insect wrangling. Their job was to make sure insects saw the light of the summer sun at the just the right moment, and made sure the balance between nature and creature was right, and herded them in zones they were needed.

Mathieu was however born with a very unusual fear: heights. They would never hover very high, and thus had a hard time following the family business. Other pixie children would tease them, and Mathieu developed a hard shell to get back at them. Mathieu ended up ditching insect wrangling to embrace the oldest pixie tradition: mischief. They went around pulling pranks on neighboring humans and creatures. However, they pushed it further than most: they pranked members of their own court, sometimes high members, and members of neighboring courts, which sometimes endangered the peace between domains. They once got too close to the neighboring Winter court and messed with a charm, which resulted in their eye being hurt and developed heterochromia. It is unknown if any other charm or curse was bestowed to this day, and they are still waiting for it to backfire on them.

Mathieu was always very close to one sibling in particular, Beatrix, who was a genius with bees. They always looked up to her, even though they tried to keep it silent as they grew. She left to see the world when they were a young adult and they came across an unfamiliar feeling: they didn't really have a goal, and time passed with days they wished were fuller.

Moving to Walpurgis

Some time passed since their elder sister Beatrix left, and they finally decided to find something they were really good at. Mischief was nice, of course, but they wanted something of their own, that would bring them pride, and didn’t put so much stress on his family and his court.

He left the court, looking for a glamour that could take him to the human world, and join his sister. Instead, Mathieu heard of Walpurgis, and thought maybe that could be his new start.

Present Day

Mathieu has found a job as a mailman and it is extremely important to them. They keep their bad boys habits lying underneath, but when they're on the job, nothing else is more important. Don't you dare touch their uniform, at the risk of the smell of rot and dung be pushed towards your house forever.

They live in a burrow on the edge of the Marasmius Nest to get to the postal office in town rapidly. They lie saying their old court was in a field, to hide the fact a house in a tree scares the hell out of them.

Race Lore

Pixies are a smaller species of winged low fae. They often find themselves tied to courts, or inhabit ancient sites such as dolmen, creeks and barrows, depending on their location. Able to camouflage themselves in their environment, they are often found holding scout positions in courts or are guardians of sacred sites. It is extremely rare to find a pixie living alone, far from a form of community.

Traditionally, pixies are benign and mischievous. They are impulsive and love to prank and play, sometimes to a dangerous degree, but it is rarely their intention. Pixies are said to reward consideration and punish neglect, and have an extremely good memory. Some individuals even have a hereditary memory, remembering grudges and blessings from their ancestors. It is never good to cross a pixie.
