...It only needs to win once

It uses its hyper awareness of the world to influence people to do what it wanted, or even completely break a person's mind should it choose to. After the whole containment incident, it has grown a bit more humble, however it is still determined to get the soul it was promised some odd years ago.

Origin of Containment
"Ribbon Head" First took interest in an unknown cult tucked away in the Ohio wilderness, worshipping a false god that looked very similar to it. It watched the cult, observed their rituals and their habits, looking for anything it could use to get the cult to entertain its offer. Once it finally did, it came to the leader in a lucid dream. it told him that it was their false god, and it had been listening to their prayers for a while now. It wished to grant those wishes, however it would need something from the cult to accomplish this:

A human soul, pure and powerful. And their body to possess.

When the leader asked who exactly had that kind of soul in their cult, Ribbon Head shook its head. Rather, it used its omniscience to locate someone nearby, that matched its requirements. Once it did, it presented a name, as well as a miniature crystal ball, focused in on the individual it wanted.

David Hasslhoth was his name.

With a name in hand, The cult leader sent out some of his men to kidnap David. With the aid of the crystal ball Ribbon Head had given, locating him was easy. And after some days of watching his routine, they found an opening and grabbed him, immediately gagging him to prevent any noise from escaping. As much as he fought with them, he was still subdued and brought to the forest the cult resided. From there, the alter was set, and the ritual began. The human sacrifice was brought forth and forced on the alter, where he and Ribbon Head made eye contact. Despite his attempts to get away, or to fight with the cultists to let him go, in the end if finally reached in, and entered his body.

That was when it went south.

David was always a fighter at heart: and he wasn't about to just accept his fate as Eldritch food. It was hell for him: The pain was immeasurable, his mind could barely handle what was happening, and he could feel his life teetering on the brink. During this time as well, The leader grew concerned: Had he been deceived? Or was their god not as strong as he made it out to be? By that point, David's body became covered in the ritual scars of Ribbon Head, his clothes in turn shredded to serve as tendrils...The tendrils swirled and flew, cutting apart anyone who stood too close...Not even their leader survived the chaos that ensued. There was blood, guts and gore everywhere around that alter. In all that time, no one had realized that this wasn't Ribbon Head at the wheel...

It was David. In their battle, he had won, and shoved it into the corner of his mind.

Unfortunately for him...he doesn't remember this. Or anything in his past. His first memory post-eldritch was waking up on an alter designed for human sacrifice, surrounded by dead bodies of cultists who had been fooled into believing they could gain godlike power. His clothes were torn, no doubt the fault of those scars all over his body...Were they always there? Something told him they weren't. When he tried to stand, he fell over, weakened by the battle with the otherworldly. After some exploring, he discovered that apparently, he was kidnapped and brought here, to be sacrificed. He found his name, but no last name: His past was lost.
