Present day
Echo lives with their childhood friend, Beatrix and her girlfriend Vee. He's double majoring in ecology and astrobiology, but because both majors pertain to his special interests, he finds it's not too hard for him to stay on top of schoolwork. Xe's a coordinator for the Disabled Student Committee at xyr college, a student organization dedicated to uplifting disabled students.
History
Echo is an only child, and only his overbearing mom was in the picture. Echo didn't have many friends growing up because of xyr strict mom, but xe did form a lifelong friendship with xyr classmate Bea when they were both around six. The two would catch frogs and tadpoles in the playground together after school while waiting for their parents to pick them up. Echo's childhood was uneventful because of their mom's helicopter parenting. He rarely got to see friends outside of school, and even in school he had a hard time making friends. They spent most of their time making art or reading about animals. Echo's fear of elevators actually stems from around this time, as Echo got trapped in an elevator for about an hour and was traumatized by the experience.
Echo was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos when they were about eleven, and around this time they came out as nonbinary. His mother really struggled to wrap her head around this knew knowledge about her child, and she became even more stressed when Echo also got an autism diagnosis. Echo was happy to know xyrself better, and was happy about finally having words to describe xyr experiences (and accomodations for xyr disabilities), but xyr mom seemed to be grieving xem despite xem being alive and well.
[cw: transphobia, ableism] Echo's mom, on top of being generally controlling, treated Echo like a small child even when they were in high school using their disabilities as excuses. On top of that, she refused to gender him correctly or use any name other than his deadname. This drove a massive wedge between them, causing Echo to cut most contact with her after graduating high school, even moving a few hours away to avoid her.
Echo found a new family in xyr friends, both new and old, and doesn't regret distancing xyrself from xyr mother. Upon moving out, they adopted a very colorful, punk-ish aesthetic, and decorated their wheelchair in ways their mother wouldn't allow. This newfound freedom really helped Echo bloom into his own person, and this was also when he chose the name "Echo."
Personality
Echo is chaotic and a troublemaker. Xe refuses to adhere to expectations, even to a fault. They're generally corteous, but the moment someone loses their respect, Echo doesn't bother with niceties. He has no regard for the law, as he hates the government. He shoplifts regularly, and has picked locks to get into restricted areas. Xe's very open about xyr emotions, and doesn't really have a filter. They laugh loudly and unapologetically, and do have a little trouble controlling the tone of their voice. He's very passionate about amphibians, and particularly preserving their habitats. Xe dreams of having a pet frog or a pet axolotl when xe can afford it.
To this day, they're scared of elevators, but they don't have much choice but to use them to get places. He's usually ok if someone else gets in the elevator with him.
