Aubergine is a demon from another dimension. He specializes in nature magic (controlling plants). Originally, he wished to work for Vincent and practically worshipped the ground he walked. Gene believed humans were pathetic creatures as they committed acts of murder, rape, etc. Because of his views, Gene often agreed with Vincent’s desires to eliminate humanity. He believed Vincent was a demon of truth and justice. He followed Vincent around for a good while, trying to gain is approval and attention. Eventually Gene arrived at Black Chicago and befriended the workers. They changed his worldview greatly, pushing him to oppose Vincent and help stop him. Cardinal straight up told him his ideology was "fucking ridiculous" and they shouldn't even be involved in human affairs, as demons had their own set of issues. While murder and rape were unforgivable, Vincent had done similar atrocious acts. Gene has grown to like humanity and wants to help better the race, encouraging them to achieve their true potential.

Cory picked out names for everyone in Black Chicago as she was the one forging their documents. She chose Aubergine due to Gene’s hatred of eggplant (the one plant he truly despises). It was not until many years later he learned what his name meant. He got fed up and insisted everyone call him “Gene” (and tells people it is short for Eugene). This is unfortunate, since Aubergine really did like the name. Occasionally Vlad still calls him by it.

Gene admires Vladimir greatly. They get along well, as they are both serious people. Gene appreciates Vlad’s views and solemn nature. At on point, he would have said he was in love with him, but that has passed. Gene got frustrated when he learned Vlad and Cardinal actually got along and that Vlad was learning many things from him. Since Cardi is so laid back, Gene holds a bit of resentment towards him. He does not appreciate his overly sexual and humorous personality.

Gene is very serious and studious. He is a critical thinker who is often skeptical, though he can easily dedicate himself to his work to the point of obsession. Gene enjoys learning about new things and expanding his knowledge. He is very trusting of friends once he gets to know them. He actually really enjoys making friends and meeting people. Can sometimes come off as a bit uptight and probably needs to learn to chill. Because of his lack of chill, Gene often clashes with Cardinal (normally nature and water demons get along due to their magical nature). Gene seems to be capable of lying, but it makes him uncomfortable. He would much rather be silent instead of tell a lie. In turn, he is very honest.

Gene’s demon form manifests itself as a large silver maple tree. He is pretty much just a giant sentient tree (which can move). Movement is done with the roots and sometimes his branches will act as arms. Each nature demon manifests as a different plant. The larger the plant, the more power one has. They can range from tiny sprouts, to trees the size of a continent (rare).

As a human, Gene is fit. He has long, wavy light blond hair and very pale skin. His hair goes to his mid-back and covers one eye. His eyes are a light blue. He wears large circular glasses, usually with a thin golden rim. Mostly he wears his hair down, but upon occasion he will put it up. Gene’s dress can vary, but for casual wear he enjoys sweatpants or jeans and t-shirts of various colors. Very rarely will he ever dress up. Gene also enjoys wearing scarves and jewelry (necklaces mainly). Vlad has described him as “beautifully handsome”. He has no body modifications and has no desire for any.
