Personality

She’s gone through so much, she barely knows where to begin.

Honestly, she doesn’t. Whatever Lasair went through is gone from her memory, stolen from her as someone’s twisted idea of mercy. She has the vaguest idea of how close she came to corruption and her near-death experience, mostly through rumors and the various witchfinders who condemn her on sight, but she heeds it little mind. What does the past matter when she has better things to do?

She’s somewhere in the middle of the falsely perfect identity she crafted in her youth and the hellion she let herself become. She’s calculating by nature, distrusting due to lingering remnants of what she lost, and ultimately hedonistic at the end of the day. She no longer has responsibilities to shoulder, little patience for false niceties, and she fully indulges in her freedom with little hesitation for her callous whims.

She enjoys having the high ground in any conversation and derives a strong sense of enjoyment from toying with others, either through intimidation or bargaining where she has the upper hand. She deeply despises being caught off guard, flustered, or being made helpless in any situation and will lash out as a result, either verbally or with her nice sharp claws she’s definitely made obvious to you by that point. She holds herself as a dangerous individual who must’ve committed horrible acts in the past, but her actual desire for bloodshed is gone. Most of her threats are just threats, but she won’t appreciate being called out on her bluff. She can be kind, though she will always demand something in return for her aid.

Call her out for her cat-like qualities and she will sneer at you for the crass analogy, but she does have a lot in common, what with her easily appeased curiosity, playful cruelty, and desire to give chase to the weak and terrified. She much prefers to be compared to the sphinx of old myths, the one waiting at crossroads with a trick to solve, lest you face its terrible hunger.

But don’t worry, she won’t bite. Too hard, anyway.

History

Lasair doesn’t remember how she’d been almost completely consumed by distrust and her lust for power. She’d grown cruel, bloodthirsty, and horribly lonely once she made the mistake of leaving the man she loved. She never gave him the chance to prove that he’d never betrayed her as she feared, but by that point, Fortune had its claws too deeply in her to listen.

She delved into her darker callings, crafting a criminal empire from the ground-up under the city of Faline, rescuing mages from the hands of Namarast witchfinders only to wrap them in her own service instead. She made cruel deals and crueler alliances, but none of it was enough. By the time she’d heard the rumor that her once-fiancé had been hunted down, she became obsessed with knowing his fate for herself. She spent months tracking down any trace of him, even burning down part of Namarast in her search, but all of it led to dead ends.

It wasn’t until she fell prey to the affliction that drove half of Ivras mad that she clawed her way to the old Veres estate, long abandoned. It was there she found his last letter to her, begging her to move on from his death sentence, and she nearly corrupted then and there from maddened grief had two mages not intervened.

There was no stopping her corruption, so the two mages instead enacted a Rite of Grace on her. Or, tried to. Members of the Order caught wind of her destruction and the Rite was barely completed, leaving many traces of corruption behind. Her memories were taken to allow for a second chance.

And thus far, she’s acclimated well to her new life, her lack of magic and inhumanity aside. Those who used to know her might pity all she’s lost, but she refuses to mourn what she can’t remember. She’s never felt so free before, and that’s all that matters to her now. [326 words]
