Sometimes Dolan regrets being born.

Of course he's sensible, he realizes that he had no say in the matter... but from what he could tell looking back at stories about his parents, he could tell his father only started to become horrible after they welcomed home their second child. Though Zion, his older sister, claimed the situation wasn't perfect. Things were already starting to strain from having a second child in the house, especially while the first child was still in the volatile phase of magic development. Dolan knew his own powers were the straw that broke the camel's back.

Dolan was originally assumed to be non-magical, or too magic for it to be visible. That is, until the day he got so worked up during a meltdown he shut down entirely and started glowing. According to the doctors, his powers were somehow based in channeling radiation, likely from taking after both his parent's magic. Dolan was immune, thank goodness, but the threat of having a child making everything in his life literally radioactive was enough to destroy whatever relationship his parents had left.

Though his mother tried to hide it, she couldn't make him forget the arguments he heard through the walls when they didn't care to check if he was sleeping. His father would make snide remarks about his mother's family, about her demonic heritage, and claim that Dolan was a monster like her family, calling her all sorts of nasty names all the while.

Dolan was never told what happened to his father, but theories flew. Zion, always down to earth, said that sometimes people just leave. Their doctor cousin, Peter, only started pitching his own ideas after starting medical school and offering reasons from amnesia to comas, only partially joking. Dolan tried to avoid the speculation verbally, just because his mother didn't need to know he could still see the bloodstains after they were washed away.

Hospital to Hospital

Though incredibly weak, Dolan's magic was still generally seen as a threat, and with the whole town agreeing his father 'left for milk' over it, no one was surprised when he was enrolled in a program to train his abilities in the city. The family moved.
