40r91v3n (40), the main antagonist, is a rogue avatar that disrupts PsycheNet. Rumours spread by PsycheNet users say that 40 is either a virus, bot, troll or the ghost of a dead girl. 40's appearance alternates throughout the story.

Garrick's encounters with 40 reveal that they've been "stuck" in PsychNet for many years and that their motive is to escape their digital prison and "return" to the real world, by any means possible.

40 is convinced that Garrick knows how to bring Avatars into the physical world, but won't tell 40. This leads 40 to persecute and threaten Garrick on multiple occasions. 40 also traps PsycheNet users inside the VR world, blaming Garrick for not saving them.
