Indra is one who is split into two. His father's son, his mother's daughter. Child of the sea, blood of fire. A dead thing living, a living thing dead.
Cursed from the womb, Indra leads a life plagued by horrific visions and brushes with death, navigating the world with one foot in the realm of the living, and the other in the realm of the dead. But this curse he bears is knowledge securely kept within the bounds of his family home, and the secrecy is stifling. If the hauntings weren't enough to drive him mad, the feelings of isolation that come with it are sure to do it.
But by adulthood, Indra has become a trained actor, his very life an act and the world his stage. He's now mastered the roles of the dutiful and honourable son, the diligent and responsible worker, and overall, the perfect, strong man. His younger brother, Juara, looks up to him. The village fathers are proud to offer their daughters' hands to him, and it is only the most sought-after among them, a girl named Bunga, with whom he has secured an engagement. He should be happy. Elated. But he is not.
How could he be? Caged in by the ghostly hands of Sang Pelebaya, the spectre that has haunted him since infancy, Indra has only ever wanted to be free. Free of the torment, and free to be himself.
But before him lies not a path of freedom, but more chains, and more masks.
NAME MEANING
His last name is a patronymic translating to "child of Kersani," whereby Kersani is his father's name. His given name, Indrawasih, is an alternate spelling of "inderawasih," a magical immortal bird in Indo-Malay mythology, and also the Malay and Indonesian word for birds-of-paradise. The name is derived from "indera", which means "deities" or "gods", while wasih is derived from "wasi", which means "representative" or "messenger."

ABOUT
Coming from a long lineage of boatmakers, Indra is, to most eyes, a regular man from the coastal town of Teluk Petang. People who might know him would perhaps talk about how he loves stories and is always scribbling in his little notebook about God-knows-what. They would also always talk about how he's the younger brother of an honourable soldier of the Senjakalan Army, Iramawira—or simply Wira—who had died protecting the people during the great riots in the capital almost a decade prior. Thus, discussion about Indra was always tinged with a mix of pity and admiration, for they all saw that he was a man who endured, and remained kind despite it all.
What most people did not know, however, besides the curse that followed him wherever he went, was that he was nothing like what they envisioned him to be. Indra did not think himself strong, but the opposite. Despite how they viewed him as a strong and preservering man, he always felt himself a child. He was always afraid, very much prone to tears, and harbouring a secret worse even than the curse etched into his bones: clutched impossibly close to his chest, was blood-red wrath.
What they did not know, and what they would scorn him for immediately if they were to ever find out, was that Indra was not kind. Indra was not pure-hearted. The smile he wore was nothing but a costume that hid the vile amalgamation of all his aches and griefs. And day by day, the mask is beginning to slip and crack, and he doesn't know how long he can keep up the act. Soon, he feels that Sang Pelebaya will consume him until there is nothing left; for one man's suffering, the world will pay the price.
That is, until he meets Yuwei.
As an ancient Siluman, a being Indra has only ever known from folk tales and legends, Yuwei is Indra's opposite. Where Indra is Death, Yuwei is Life eternal. Where Indra is one life wrapped in a thousand faces, Yuwei has lived a thousand lives with only the one face. Where Indra is the damp darkness of the grave, Yuwei is the burning light of stars in space. He is thus drawn to Yuwei immediately, and their lives quickly become intertwined, both of them finding home within each other's haunted eyes.

- He and his brothers have given names comprised of two words: Iramawira, Indrawasih, and Juaranusa, but they go by Wira ["hero"], Indra ["deity"], and Juara ["champion"] respectively. Each of their full names represent their ideals and goals:
- Iramawira - "Melody of heroes." He yearned for the glory described in songs.
- Indrawasih - "Birds-of-paradise." He yearns for freedom and paradise.
- Juaranusa - "Champion of the homeland." He yearns for a country he can call home.
