Personality

His gaze is knowing. Everything you are feels laid bare before him, and how comforting it is when he returns an adoring smile on you. His touch is gentle, (ignore the scars on his palm as it caresses your cheek), and his voice is soothing, (he knows you better than you know yourself), and he has proven time and time again how he has fought on the behalf of those he loves (don't look at the blood he's spilled on your behalf).

He doesn’t treat everyone this way. To most, he is courteous, patient and polite, but there is a clear distinction drawn for him between those he’s chosen to care about and all the rest. Who he decides to welcome into his good graces is a seemingly fickle thing, his smile landing anywhere from the pure of heart to the deepest scoundrel. What draws him is rather difficult to find in others; he seeks a sense of story, be it tragic star-crossed love, noble intentions that become poisoned with the weight of the world, passionate artistry that sings with yearning – once he sees that, you’ve earned his love and loyalty.

He knows the road you walk down, the paths you blindly seek, but he will not let you fall, not with his hand locked around your wrist. He’ll bring those star-crossed lovers together against their own stubborn beliefs, cleanse the noble of his guilt as he commands the necessary guillotine, and see the artist to their beloved conclusion. All with a kiss to your brow as their tears flow and everything else burns around you.

He is the wish you ask the cruel djinn for pure devotion; he is the devil who loves you. He will help you see your story to its natural conclusion, even if he’s to rip out your heart to do it.

History

Mordreaux has spun tales of his childhood, one ringing more lovely and more false than the last. He was raised as a prince in his own right - no, no. He was loved by Morgan le Fay far away from castle walls, with faeries for playmates - no. He lived in a place made strange by the tides of magic, where time never touched, where there were different rules to live by that makes all mortal standards pale in comparison. Why not believe that the circlet on his brow is made of faerie gold? There's an undeniable charm in that.

Truth be told, he barely remembers being young. He never stayed in one place for long, always searching for something that can make him linger. His past is marked by the ruins of fallen kingdoms, of old battlefields he joined for the thrill of it, of tangled stories of forbidden love doomed to end in tragedy. He heard both spoken justifications for anguish and conflicting hidden desires that echoed within his chest, and he coaxed those desires free with nothing but gentle empathy.

Again and again he saw misery caused by the chains of virtue, bound by pointless rules. Covet not thy neighbor’s lady despite how her gaze strays to you; bear a false smile for your enemy because he shares your blood, despite how envy sickens your veins. Why? Why should you withhold your true desires for shallow modesty, for societal expectations?

If you lust for the death of your neighbor in order to claim his lady, what stops you, truly? Mordreaux feels how you ache, and simply wants to share that moment of release from your pointless shackles. And if his sweetly spoken advice resulted in feuds, all the better. People are more honest on the battlefield, as they shed all their pointless, peace-keeping lies.

Truthfully, his youth was spent plotting the death of his father the king by the will of his cruel mother, and Mordreaux foolishly fell in love with someone who should've remained an instrument of his scheme. His first plot ended in turmoil and death, and his love, Lugh, survived only to be caught in a centuries-long feud borne of betrayal and lies crafted by Mordreaux's mother, who wanted to keep him as a useful pawn. Everything after that, Mord committed in full knowledge and delight for the downfall of others, knowing he was no better than those he condemned.

Mordreaux has slain dragons, toppled kings, and played a hand on far too many stories and legends to even begin to believe. It's a mistake to catch his attention, and far too late when he has you in his mind.

Disclaimer: Beyond his passive mind-reading, his magic will never be used without OOC consent.

"Lay down your woes with me. Your burdens, your nightmares, lay them at my feet. I hear your thoughts side by side with my own, I feel your pain in my chest. Your thoughts form the lash, and your backs bleed in silence."

Mordreaux can hardly remember a time when he wasn't able to read the thoughts of others. It is a constant, passive magic that allows him to hear surface level thoughts, internal monologues, and emotions that he personally feels. If he lets them, the emotions of others can overwhelm him and drag him under. He can delve into deeper thoughts, though he cannot multitask conversation while doing so. It will be very clear he's listening to something else, distracted by another conversation entirely.

He can read old memories, alter them, knit them together, or erase them completely, though he needs time and concentration in order to do so. A ritual would help make this permanent, but a quick and hasty tearing of memories will work, albeit can be recalled with a certain trigger.

He can create convincing hallucinations and illusions and even manipulate false physical sensations to torment his victims into believing his lies. He has the ability for very simple commands through mind control, such as stilling muscles or making others walk away, but he does not enjoy using it without explicit reason (and will only do so to NPC's or my own characters). He can also delve into dreams, though he has to be in close proximity to use any of his magic.

He can take any of these powers to their natural extremes, but prefers not to. If he can convince you to do as he wants on the strength of his words alone, he will.

Costs

Magic use has a short-term adverse effect on the caster's mood/frame of mind.
Mordreaux and hears and feels the thoughts and emotions of all others around him, constantly. All of his actions and methods of communication are based around this, and he is often affected by the moods of those around him.
