Vivian can be a bit of a wild card. On one hand, he is outwardly warm and good-natured, keen to dish out compliments and treat neighbors with good hospitality. On the other hand, he can be playful to the point of mischief, is a serial half-truther, and has the tendency to lash out with a bitingly sarcastic remark or two, all with a smile on his face. Vivian delights in getting a reaction out of folks, whether it be positive or negative, and an invitation for tea in his outlandishly decorated abode could have all manner of outcomes. Their mirthful, devil-may-care attitude can make them a fun witch to be around, but they can easily come across as callous in their indifference.
While Vivian does enjoy making friends, particularly those that are easy to tease, his first and foremost concerns are with himself and his desires, and he’s gotten out of many sticky situations by stepping on a few heads. Still, he harbors a genuine care for the wellbeing of those who’ve stuck around long enough to develop a real bond.

Magic
Area of Expertise
While they have an interest in many forms of basic fortune telling, Vivian specializes in magic relating to sleep and dreams, primarily as a means of scrying or therapy. Strangely, the bulk of their magical essence is concentrated in the lungs, and is expelled in breaths in order to cast spells. Vivian uses a pipe as a secondary conductor, and also to amplify the effect of his magic.
Abilities
Sleep Aid: Vivian can influence an individual’s quality of sleep for a single night. This can have a variety of effects, from accelerating or delaying sleep to producing a quick, dreamless night or one full of sweet fantasies. Or nightmares, if that’s what you really want. Vivian is only able to influence one particular outcome for one person at a time, and those under the effect of the spell must follow a specific bedtime ritual in order for it to work as intended.
Dream Walking: It's possible for Vivian to join another in their dream, either to passively observe, or to interact with the sleeper by way of lucid dreaming. This process is heavily built on trust and transparency, as the dreamer must create a link by willingly opening their mind to Vivian, and keeping it open throughout the time both slumber. Having a pre-established bond greatly increases the chance of success and improves the experience overall. However, if at any point the dreamer becomes doubtful or shuts vivian out, intentionally or not, vivian will be forcefully ejected back to the waking world and the dream will end. This is generally painful for Vivian, and may result in a strong headache for the dreamer.
Soporific Aura: Prolonged exposure to Vivian’s magic, whether or not he’s performing specific spells, can cause a fleeting drowsiness in those who aren’t used to it. The feeling will dissipate once leaving their vicinity. Any magical being will build an immunity to it over time.
Limitations
• Their abilities, ironically, will exhaust them if used too often. Vivian may appear lethargic or moody after casting more complex spells as they succumb to the effects of their own magic. Because of this, Vivian may outright refuse to bewitch people unless they make a strong case for it, or offer him something of value.
• As previously stated, the success of Vivian's dream walking is based on the nature of his relationship to the other person. If there is an overwhelming sense of distrust, or consent is revoked mid-sleep, the link will immediately sever.
• His magic simply does not work when he’s sick. If he attempts a spell while ill, it’s far more likely to cause the complete opposite effect than intended.
Familiar
A spectral blue morpho which Vivian conjured as a child. He believes it is some sort of wandering spirit, but has never bothered to find out. It carries some of his magic within itself and, depending on the spell, it may be sent home with a bewitched patient to further aid sleep. Vivian has dubbed it Selene.
Personal Lore
History
Early Life
Vivian was orphaned at a young age, left unceremoniously by the entrance to a tiny magical settlement in the midwest. Taken in by a teacher and brought up alongside several other children, Vivian had little to no memory of their parents. A fact they’ll claim suits them just fine - less baggage to worry about anyway. With no family to speak of, vivian had a difficult time deciphering the particular form of magic passed down through their bloodline. That is until they started unwittingly putting other kids to sleep with the clouds of glittering smoke they began coughing up. Without a teacher proficient in the arts of sleep magic, much of Vivian's prowess was owed to their own study, willpower, and heaps of trial and error. Moreso the latter, as Vivian was never really the bookish type.
As his abilities grew with him, he eventually decided to spread his wings, a choice that his peers and old caretakers tried to discourage him from. But Vivian was itching to ditch the place, feeling eager for a bit of adventure, a chance to expand his mind and his list of experiences. Once reaching the comfy age of 23 he left the settlement, moving eastward and hopping from place to place, never sticking to one town for too long. Over time, Vivian earned a bit of a reputation as a fortune teller - a skill he had no actual magical ability in, but that he found enjoyable nonetheless. Not to mention, it provided an excellent bit of cover.
As heedless as he could be at the worst of times, Vivian didn’t dare to perform real magic on the humans who came to him for aid, but he certainly didn't mind the way the presence of his magic made them sleepy and oblivious. Much easier to pry into their thoughts or convince them to cough up a few extra dollars that way. And as soon as he’d start to attract a little too much negative attention, he’d pack up his bags and be on his way.
Moving to Walpurgis
Vivian would come to hear of Walpurgis while passing through the settlement of Wilesden in North Carolina. Initially, they’d been avoiding hanging around places like Wilesden and Walpurgis for fear that their counsel leaders might try to entrap them in town and bar them from sauntering out into the mortal world again. But after several years of strictly human affairs, Vivian had to admit that they missed the magical freedom, and took to poking their nose around whatever settlements he came across. Taking their sweet time traveling up the coast, they finally wandered into the New England township.
Present Day
Though he’s only been living in Walpurgis for a short time, Vivian has come to grow quite fond of the lakeside scenery and is greatly amused by his wildly diverse neighbors. Hunkering down in his own little home in Casterly Court, he’s happy to finally be able to offer his real services as something like a back alley sleep doctor, with a pinch of card reading on the side.
Race Lore
Witches have existed since humans first got their hands on magic. After centuries of studying and perfecting the manipulation of magic, their abilities have grown more and more potent within their close family groups. Keeping their bloodlines intact and strong is a high priority of most traditional Witching families, and they take great care with who they allow into their line. The head of a family is almost always the oldest female member, as they follow a matriarchal system of power.
While Witches have an innate talent with magic and can perform small amounts without a conduit, they often choose to channel it through an object such as a focus, a wand, a crystal ball, etc., to stabilize the spell and amplify its power. They have the potential to learn most types of magic with enough time, but are usually more adept at the specific branch their family has studied for generations. This has led to several smaller subsets of Witches, such as those at focus on blood magic, divination, enchantment, illusion, shadows, or any other subject.
