Hai is very much like the different phases of the ocean. On stage, he has a cool, strong, powerful presence; seemingly passionate. Off stage, he can be calm and a little cold; a little distant. Hai is not the friendliest idol out there. He can be a little cold, which comes off as condescending but in reality he's just not good with social interactions. N2's Kai is expressive, but off-idol mode Hai is quiet and reserved. He tends to keep to himself, but this creates a mysterious allure to his image that is popular among his fan.s

Background

Hai was born into a working class family where his parents worked hard to put him and his older siblings through college. He is the second youngest of four children, which might explain his reserved personality. His older siblings are both in graduate school and despite the grants and scholarships, money was a heavy toll on their family. During Hai's first year of college, he was scouted by Perseus's entertainment company and was onboarded as a trainee for two years. Initially his parents were against it, but reluctantly agreed when Hai pointed out that the company would cover the expense of his trainee period and if it works out, he can help his parent pay for his sibling's schooling.

Hai made it to the pre-debut stage in a group, but the group never garnered enough popularity to properly take off. However, his agency, Odyssey, saw a lot of potential in Hai and reassigned him into a duo with another one of their idols, Mo Han (stage name Eos). The two of them formed nep-2NE (N2; pronounced Neptune), and debuted with the theme of contrast/opposites; Eos is the sky and Kai is the sea, Eos is high in energy were Kai is calm. N2 was a huge success and the two were able to debut smoothly.

But despite being an idol, Hai still finds it difficult to adjust to the celebrity life style. He dislikes being recognized on the street because he knows that as an idol, he has an image to upkeep but he struggles with social interactions. It's better with Momo around since his teammate is the social one who can chat them out of any situation, but when alone, Hai finds himself struggling to be amicable. Fortunately, his fans find the gap between his stage persona and his real self to be charming (though Hai can't understand why).

Not to say that Hai doesn't enjoy being an idol, but passion is not the reason why he is an idol. He's mainly doing it for the money, but Hai does find satisfaction to see the direct results of his hard work. Despite being successful, Hai is still quite humble about the entire experience and doesn't like to boast or brag about it. When out in public, he tries his best not to stand out. N2-Kai is well known to the public for being a private person.
