Jaws works as the owner of the top aquatic pet shop in The Neon District.
He loves learning about and taking care of aquatic animals, pet types and otehrwise; growing up near the ocean was a large part of this love. He is incredibly kind and often offers up his help to friends and strangers equally. This kindness is incredibly uncommon in The District, but mot find it very welcoming and it apart of the reason he has become so successful.
He's seen with his best friend, Weelz, any time he isn't in his own shop and tends to follow them around on their daily tasks.
Carer: Even past fish, Jaws finds it incredibly easy to care for living thigs. He's very empathetic and works hard to build a lasting relationship with most everyone he talks to, because of this he is quite popular.
Survivor: His past of homelessness outside The District prepared him for the harsh beginnings everyone goes through during their first months to years in The District. He isn't picky and finds it easy to sleep mostly anywhere.
Match-maker: His extensive knowledge of fish and other aquatic animals makes his pairing skills incredibly high brow. Most people come in never having owned a sea creature, but leave with something that fills them with confidence and matches their routine.
Born as [redacted] Morales in southern California, he always suffered through poverty. His mother, as hard working as she was, could never make ends meet as a single mother. Around age 6 his mother moved them into a van she scrounged up money for. This was a dramatic turn in his life. His mother was less stressed and he found himself feeling freedom he didn't feel under the weight of an uncertain living situation. Though other children at school mocked him for his uncanny lifestyle he never found it troubling or upsetting.
As time went on things were very 'normal' for him, up until his last year of high school. Tragically he lost his mother in a hit and run accident while she was walking from the grocery store. This left him with no guardian and no stable home. He stopped going to school entirely and lead his life the way his mother would've wanted for him; he took the can and drove to the coast and started his life there.
The Ocean
Living on the beach led him to his passion. He got a job as a full-time lifeguard via an old friend from high school. He was much less interested in the people swimming than he was in the fish and creatures that inhabited the water and washed up on the shore. Even in off hours he would spend all of his time walking up and down the beach looking for things in the sand, in turn saving hundreds of fish weekly and earning money selling valuables and shells.
He always wished he could share that feeling of true freedom with his late mother, but he imagines she lives on in their van and enjoys life at seaside with him. He hopes to one day take Weelz to the beach to share this feeling.
The District
Turning up in The District wasn't nearly as much of a struggle as it tends to be for people. He was used to the vitriol thrown his way and the hungry nights. Meeting Weelz on a random night is what changed his path, he has no intention of opening a shop; thinking he would scrounge forever like a lot are forced to do, but Weelz told him that a passion should be shared and given. (Weelz doesn't remember saying that, but he is certain that is exactly what they said.)
- He eats grilled cheese often because cheese and bread were always affordable in his childhood.
- He never got to officially come out to his mother, but knows that she knew and loved him regardless.
- His favorite fish is the Royal Blue Tang because his mother's favorute fish was "that blue fish from Finding Nemp".
- Maux is pronounced "mox", and before the district his friends called him Moxy. A shortening of his name and a pun on his disposition.
- He names every fish he comes across and remembers them flawlessly.
Weelz •
best friend
Jaws' best friend and favorite person. They are different from each other, but bring life into each other's brilliant minds. He secretly hopes that one day he can make Weelz truly happy outside of The District, though he has no way of putting this into words.
