Backed by centuries of self-driven ambition and experience in the musical world, Blane excels at both being a musician and band leader. Like the other members of his group, Penumbra, his performance skills are seemingly inhuman... probably because they truly are! However, Blane's supernatural existence in particular comes at the price of pain, often branching from the overexertion of his powers. This has driven him to exhibiting a strong addiction to nicotine and various forms of painkillers. While much of the general public is quick to assume the drug abuse simply comes from the fame and fortune scene, this is not the case.

Blane may strike one as being your typical rough around the edges rocker kind of guy with a hint of cold shoulder, occasionally voicing a variation of lackadaisical comments and edgy remarks, depending on the situation. And when he isn't keeping his cool, he's probably getting irrationally heated over something (inevitably living up to the "Blaze" nickname!) More than anything, it is very clear that Blane is in love with the idea of music, however. So much so, many consider him to be an obsessive workaholic as a band leader; he prefers the term "passionate" himself.
Despite Blane's deep, long running bonds with Donovan, Tali and a select other few, Blane regards music as being his "one true companion." In a world full of unreliable people that will come and go (and sometimes stab you in the back, as history has proven to him,) music never fades. Though he can quite easily sell the rock star look and lifestyle, deep down, he distances himself from most people emotionally. His outlook on life often treads the same shades of darkness that fill his soul, having a habit of eating up whatever light he finds like a black hole. 

Brief History

Blane wasn't always known by the name "Blane." Blane is the end result of an imbalanced coalescence of human and Familiar, the Familiar soul being the more predominant portion.
In that sense, half of his life started out as a lion-like Familiar named Anzulainan - or Anzu, for short. The other half began centuries later with a young boy named Aten who, in his early twenties, had the fortune of happening upon Anzulainan, forming a bond with the spirit. This later evolved into forming a pact after a few years.

For many years more, their partnership seemed fruitful; they exuded power and grace as a team. However, there came a day where Aten grew jealous of his Familiar, eventually turning on Anzu out of greed. Quite literally stabbing him in the back, Aten possesed a blade that promised to absorb Anzu's soul, allowing him to possess his power as his own without killing Anzu and thus breaking the pact. Devastated and with his life now on the line, Anzulainan refused the "petty" attempts at hostile takeover, almost killing Aten before, in Aten's own hubris, Anzu took possession of his body. This was the beginning of a long, painful life as a Merged entity.

It began as possession, Aten and Anzu's minds completely separate before they began to grow together as one, eventually becoming the entity now known as "Blane."
It has taken centuries of pain, practice and patience to physically and spiritually adapt to one another's powers and limitations and, to this day, their mergence is still incomplete. The strain of Familiar powers and abilities upon the human body still showcases its complications in Blane from time to time.

Trivia

    ▫  Technically, Blane doesn't have a birthday. Only Aten does on a truly technical level, which Blane refuses to acknowledge as his own. Both Anzu and Blane have what are known as "days of creation" instead, much like Androids, the Merged and other entities of organic and synthetic design that were never actually birthed. Blane's day of creation is marked by the day Anzu possessed Aten. For many years, he referred to Anzu's day of creation as his starting point before choosing to recognize the other date instead. 

    ▫  Anzu's day of creation is December 5th. Aten's birthday is July 15th. One could theoretically celebrate Blane's life on July 15th, October 27th and December 5th; three "birthdays" in a year!

    ▫  His tattoos tell his life story in a very subtle manner; a particular line of markings on his left arm depicting the betrayal between Anzu and Aten. They draw inspiration from both Polynesian and Tribal designs.

    ▫  When the "black hole" inside his FR (Familiar Rift) activates, it also consumes what is stored inside its space. He has had to replace his instruments and other belongings time and time again because of this.

    ▫  His last name "Hauston" also belongs to Nikolai and Nathaniel Hauston (Anthology of Anon.) This is not by accident. The Hauston brothers are descendants by blood of Sir Geran Hauston, proudly carrying the name to this day.
