Avis left his average life after many years to travel the world and find solitude. He'd been bullied by humans for years because of his ears and tail, and was a bit of an outcast within his own species because of his rougher attitude. During his travels he was attacked by a mage, who managed to do a lot of physical damage. Avis got hurt so bad, he could barely walk. He made it to the woods, and tried to find a spot to hide and recover. However, he passed out from his wounds. 

When he woke up, Avis was in a bed in a small wooden cottage. Once he left the room, he found a young woman sitting at a small table, casually eating. She freaked out when she saw him, and became incredibly shy, but managed to tell him her name; Avalon. Turns out she’d nursed him back to health and healed all his wounds with potions and magic. As he was about to leave, the cottage was attacked by a different mage, who was apparently after Avalon for her magic powers. Avis fought the mage off, and decided that he’d protect Avalon in return for saving his life. He is still staying with her. 

Avalon is currently the only person that Avis trusts, and he feels a strong connection with her. He decided to become her guardian and protector because of her shy personality and the fact she saved his life when he needed help.
