Motostoke's Sparky Minor League Gym Leader!
Kana puts on a rather fierce and flamboyant act when she's in her role as Gym Leader, but in reality, she's nothing like her professional persona! Many people - her Gym Trainers included - can be intimidated by Kana at first, but she's actually very amiable and approachable, preferring to take a more mellow approach to life when she's not on the battlefield. Many people have compared her to the two forms of Toxtricity - Amped when she's fighting and training, and Low-Key when she's off the pitch. Kana readily admits to this duality, saying something about battling just ignites a spark in her; even though her professional persona may seem like a facade at times, her drive and passion for her work is completely authentic!
Although many Minor League Gym Leaders get less attention than their Major League counterparts, Kana's relationship with Kabu has catapulted her into the media's eye. Her persona and promise as a Gym Leader has also attracted a bit of a cult following, both in Galar and her home Region of Johto alike. Although Kana finds the media anxiety-provoking in general, she has been able to direct some of the attention she's received onto projects she and Kabu both care about and work together on, such as Green Up Motostoke, Clear the Shelters (an effort to promote Pokemon fostering/adoption), and, of course, Sparks and Embers, their mentoring program for young children interested in working with Fire - and Electric-Types.
Off the job, she's a different person entirely...
Kana works hard - and seems to get a lot of her energy out through her training! In her daily life, she's pretty mellow and easy-going; her idea of a great time is curling up with a cup of tea and a book, or meeting up with friends for pizza at her favorite joint, Pancham's Pizzas. Fortunately, her partner, Kabu, is much the same as her, and the two enjoy a very cozy, slow-paced life as far away from the public eye as possible.
Kabu and Kana enjoy some small weekly indulgences together, such as sushi at Sakura's, where Kabu's long-time friend, Ryouta, works, as well as weekly visits to the Motostoke Library, where they enjoy reading side-by-side until the sun goes down. Although Kana's immediate family lives in Johto and Kabu's lives in Hoenn, they have strong bonds with Kana's dearest friends, Missy and Onyx, as well as with Nessa and Milo, who Kabu has treasured and served as a father-figure for since their childhood. Kana and Kabu both consider themselves lucky to have a supportive 'found family' in Galar - and once they start having children, they find themselves even luckier to see their babies growing up with so many aunts and uncles who adore them!

Fun Facts
- Kana keeps all her Pokemon in Heal Balls - she likes their aesthetic!
- Kana's signature hype song that plays in a battle to work up the crowd is Greenlights by Krewella, but once she played the Space Jam theme song as a joke and it kind of caught on....
- She unironically loves the 80s and 90s aesthetic!
- Her gym is in a geodesic sphere that was left plain white in color because of how many Gym Leaders with different Types used to cycle through it (Minor League problems). Most of the community thought it was pretty ugly until Kana got the idea to use lasers to light it up purple and pink at night!
- Kana's Gym Challenge is to fight against her Trainers while singing karaoke! Her Gym Trainers all have a Toxtricity for accompaniment. The big secret of the gym is that you can't lose at the karaoke part of the Challenge - anyone who tries makes it through, because sometimes it's not about how good you are, it's about having the confidence to try!
Pokemon
Competitive Team
As team lead, Alva loves to start battles out strong! Alva was the first new Pokemon Kana acquired in Galar - and, for many years, she was the only Pokemon besides Gizmo that Kana had! Kana met Alva as a tiny Joltik who had taken up residence in the garden of her shared apartment with Missy and Kana - but this little Pokemon was causing big problems, chewing through siding and wires in search of more tasty electricity. Kana spent a few days earning Alva's trust, and then brought her indoors, where she was able to eat electricity straight from the outlet without causing any structural damage. Alva soon made herself at home - and took to riding around on Kana's shoulder, too! She's a bit big for that now, but that doesn't stop her from cuddling up with Kana instead!
Rotom Phone, Roto-Dex, Rotom Rally, and trusted battle partner - Gizmo does it all! Gizmo used to serve as Kana's parents' house-Rotom back in Johto, operating the washer, dryer, lawn mower, and more - at least, until a young and adventurous Kana convinced him to join her for some Pokemon battles. Gizmo's been with Kana ever since. He's endlessly cheerful and chatty, though he does have a mischievous streak...blame it on the Ghost typing, maybe? Although he's pretty tireless, lately he's been begging Kana to get another Rotom for her phone, since she uses it so much. All the same, he's Kana's oldest friend and best confidant. He usually fights in his Wash form, since he loves surprising opponents who weren't expecting Hydro Pump on an Electric team, and his dream is to race in the Tour de Kalos one day.
Bean is small but mighty, playing an integral role in Kana's team of laying down Spikes or Toxic Spikes, and hazing fast opponents with Thunder Wave. Bean was discovered by Kana while she relaxed in the Loop Lagoon on the Isle of Armor. She had just competed in the Armor Open, a prestigious triathlon, and decided to take the rest of the day to relax before catching the train home - though her relaxation plans were somewhat squashed when she stepped on a mostly-buried Bean. Neither party was pleased, and Bean wound up hounding Kana in irritation until she decided to take the angry little Pokemon home to make sure he felt better. At one point, she commented on what a grumpy little bean he was - and the name stuck. Funnily enough, Bean's favorite food is Pokebeans, though he only gets a few a day as a treat - they're expensive to import from Alola!
Once Bean's ability activates Electric Terrain, watch out, because it means Maple, Kana's Surge Surfer, isn't far behind! Maple is super-fast on Electric Terrain and uses her Psychic and Electric moves to sweep the playing field clean. Many a Gym Challenge has ended once Maple comes out! Despite this, Maple is the princess of the team, and demands fluffy pancakes with lots of syrup every Saturday - whether they're training, traveling, camping, or at home! She loves cooking with Kana and often acts as the interpreter of the team, conveying their thoughts and opinions to Kana with her Psychic type skills whenever needed.
Prepare for noise whenever Jet is out, whether on the battlefield or off! Jet caught Kana by surprise during one of her training rides out in the Wild Area - she unknowingly ran over his Gigantamax Den with her bike and fell in. The territorial lizard was provoked to attack, and blew Kana out of his den with no difficulty. Kana was determined to catch him, though, and after seven attempts (and some help from Kabu), she finally succeeded. Jet is now Kana's ace Pokemon for Gym Battles. He's extremely sarcastic and expressive; some tabloids call him rude, given his tendency to pull faces or even flip people off, but his antics seem to actually garner him fans! He's a crowd favorite, and it's well-known that he's still as territorial as ever - though now, he tends to protect Kana more than anything else.
Sparky only comes out during exhibition battles against other Gym Leaders or in the Champion Cup - he's never in rotation for battle against the Minor League Gym Challengers, and for good reason! They're a heavy hitter, and no small part of this is due to the conditioning they received from Team Rocket as a Shadow Pokemon. Kana first encountered Sparky in the Kanto Power Plant at age 16, though she didn't know what the Pokemon was at the time. Sparky got his name from his first meeting with Kabu after being purified from his previous Shadow state; Kabu tried to pet them, received quite the static electric shock, and commented on what a sparky little thing they were. Naturally, Sparky stuck, and Kabu is perhaps closer to Sparky than to anyone else on Kana's team!

Relationships
Kabu and Kana first met in the Wild Area just outside Motostoke - he was getting ready to go for an early morning run, and she was preparing for a bike ride. At the time, an unknown threat in the form of a highly aggressive Electric-type Pokemon in the Wild Area had just emerged. As the two of them began the months-long process of dealing with the mysterious Pokemon, they found that the hours of research, reconnaissance, and enforced quarantine periods to shelter from the massive damage the Pokemon could deal had brought them together. Furthermore, they each lit a spark in one another; Kana felt inspired to re-enter the world of Pokemon battling thanks to Kabu, and Kabu felt inspired to try to push for the Champion title one more time because of Kana. It wasn't long until Kana found herself falling for Kabu, who was always the perfect mix of brave, kindhearted, and gentlemanly around her.
Ninjin was born two minutes before her twin, Negi, thereby making her Kana's eldest child. Named in the tradition of Kabu's family (root vegetables), Ninjin's name means carrot, but she'll go by Nin for short! Of Kana's twins, Nin is the outgoing and extroverted one, possessing all her mother's sunshine and all her father's determination. When Nin takes up Electric-type Pokemon as her specialization, Kana considers whether she might be a good fit to inherit the Electric Gym from her someday - but for now, she's a bit too much of a sore loser to be the right choice. Instead, Nin goes on to battle the elements, becoming a spunky Pokemon Ranger in the Wild Area. Whether she decides to settle down and try to take over the Gym will remain to be seen, but for now, Kana and Kabu are happy knowing that their daughter is doing what she loves - and enjoying the Wild Area as much as they do!
Negi, Kana's only and youngest son, is quite different than the rest of his family! Shy, quiet, and introverted, Negi knew he never wanted to grow up to be a Gym Leader like his parents - it just wasn't the right fit for his personality! Instead, he bonded strongly to his Salandit, and when he heard from his grandmother on Kabu's side how so many Pokemon who are part-Poison type are maligned in other Regions (with Grimer and Muk being driven out of cities, etc), Negi knew he had found his cause. With his parents' help, he becomes an activist for Poison-type Pokemon, hoping to spread awareness about their needs and how to appropriately manage them in a way that doesn't hurt the Pokemon or their surroundings - and Kana and Kabu couldn't be prouder of him!

If there's one thing Kana and Aviva share in common, it's a love of books! Really, the two ladies have quite a few things in common, but their love of books is what brought them together, and it remains an important part of their friendship to this day. Kana and Aviva first met when Kabu and Kana had travelled to Circhester for one of Kabu's exhibition matches against Gordie. Kana decided to stop in at a little bookstore called Chandelure's Chapters she'd heard good things about, and she was immediately impressed, both with the amount of rare and antique books and with Aviva, the shopkeeper. It wasn't long until Kana and Kabu put together that Aviva was actually Gordie's partner, and the rest was history!

Kana and Kabu meet Caramel at the Master Dojo on the Isle of Armor! Mustard kindly encourages Kabu to come train with him when Kabu expresses interest in making his next serious bid at securing the Championship title, and Kana is of course eager to come along! There's a lot of friendly faces at the Dojo, but Caramel quickly stands out to Kana, owing to the fact that he's Mustard's great-nephew and tends to spend a bit of time inside with his cousin, Hyde. Kana soon finds herself doing the same thing - she needs her down time to recharge her batteries, after all, and the Master Dojo's tough training regimen wears her out more quickly than she'd like to admit! Fortunately, Caramel is a kind quiet time companion, and Kana bonds with him over this - plus she loves hearing his stories of how well-travelled he is! Despite Caramel's kindness, he's a rather formidable training partner in his own right, and many of Kana's strategies for handling Ground-types develop from all the times she faces off with Caramel's Mamoswine. Although Kana eventually returns to Motostoke and Caramel goes his separate way, the two stay in touch fairly regularly, and manage to bump into one another in their future travels around the world, too!

Kana and Siane share a friendship that spans Regions! The two met through Nanu, who had been sent out to Galar shortly after the Aedis event on an Interpol mission. Said mission ended up involving helping to control the Zeraora that Kana eventually went on to capture; Kana and Kabu befriended Nanu as they worked side by side with him on the matter. Eventually, Nanu went back home to Alola - but not without offering for Kana and Kabu to visit him someday! The pair took him up on the offer, expecting to enjoy the weather and the scenery - but Kana was delighted to find that Nanu had a partner around her age! The two became nearly inseparable, and could be found doing anything from crazy high-flying stunts to getting takeout at the local malasada shop. Even after their first meeting, they stay in touch regularly, and get to visit one another in perseon from time to time too!
[Taylor belongs to Siren! Art of Taylor used here is by Erinsomnia; information on Taylor can be found here!]
Kana met Taylor when she began looking for young, easily-trainable Electric and Fire type Pokemon to help adopt out to participants in her and Kabu's mentoring program, Sparks and Embers. Naturally, the Daycare was the perfect place to turn - and fortunately, Taylor was the most experienced worker there! Over the course of working together on this project, Taylor and Kana have become fast friends, with Kana even naming Tayloras one of the godparents to her eldest daughter, Ninjin. As her godparent, Taylor actually gave Nin her signature Pokemon - an incredibly rare shiny Gigantamax Pikachu, who never leaves Nin's side now! Taylor and Kana can often be found going through lists of what Pokemon to match to what mentee, going out for tea, or otherwise just having fun going for hikes or even having practice battles in the Wild Area - Taylor is a former Champion, after all!
History
Childhood
Born in Goldenrod City, Kana grew up in a relatively stable home. Her mother worked in the Daycare just south of the city as a Pokemon Breeder with a proclivity for Electric-Type Pokemon, and her father worked on the Magnet Train as an electrical engineer. Her parents always suspected she might grow up to follow in their footsteps and become an Electric-type specialist, but never pressured her to choose that path. Fortunately, Kana never needed any pressuring to begin with. When she was 8, her parents ordered a Rotom from the Goldenrod Department Store to operate the appliances around the house and help her mother with chores. When said Rotom arrived, it didn't take Kana long to sneak out with him at night and venture to the nearby National Park, where she began fighting every other Trainer she could lock eyes with. She nicknamed the Rotom "Gizmo" along the way and managed to avoid getting caught for a few months - but eventually, her parents found out what she was doing, courtesy of a Park officer who had caught on to her. Needless to say, little Kana was immediately super grounded.
After a couple weeks of being forbidden to go challenge Trainers (and many lectures reminding her that she wasn't even the legal age to have a Trainer's license), Kana's mother finally realized that her daughter needed a sense of adventure and an opportunity to bond with Pokemon in order to flourish. Kana was promptly enrolled at the local Trainer's School, which she attended on the weekends.
Preteen Years
Within two years, Kana and Gizmo had become forces to be reckoned with. As soon as Kana received her official Trainer's license at age 10, she trekked to Route 36 north of Goldenrod City and caught a Shinx (exactly as she'd been planning to do for the last year and a half). Along the way, she met two boys on bikes named Morty and Eusine, who claimed they were searching for Legendary Pokemon. To her surprise, when she challenged them to a battle, they were both able to defeat her. Undaunted, Kana challenged them to meet her same time, same place next week - and thus, a friendly rivalry was born.
As Kana kept getting stronger, people began noticing, and her parents began suspecting that their child had real talent as a Pokemon Trainer. Kana's dad reached out to a friend of a friend, who put him in touch with Lieutenant Surge in Kanto. Swayed by some stories of Kana's battle prowess, the Electric-type Gym Leader agreed to let Kana try out for a position as a Gym Trainer during their next round of auditions. As a result, within a month, Kana and her family found themselves on the S.S. Anne en route to Vermillion City.
Kana was extremely nervous when battling in front of Lieutenant Surge, and admittedly made a few more mistakes than she had wanted to. Still, she managed to win a few battles, and Surge was undeniably impressed by her abilities. He agreed to take her on as a Gym Trainer, but only part time, with the stipulation that she spend an adequate amount of time with her family back home in Johto - he didn't feel comfortable with separating Kana from her family full-time, given her age.
Although Kana was intimidated by Lieutenant Surge at first, a strong bond and mutual understanding sprang up between the two of them, with Surge becoming an unexpected father-figure in Kana's life. The sight of a large, muscle-bound man holding a young girl's hand as they headed down to the docks of Vermillion Bay for ice cream became quite routine. During their 'dock talks,' as they called them, Surge attempted to instill in Kana the value of caution in all things, as it had been what had saved his life as a soldier; conversely, he'd seen too many bright lights like Kana blaze out after throwing caution to the wind. Kana, on the other hand, preferred to use their 'dock talks' to chat about whatever was going on in her life - including, eventually, a certain crush on a young blond-haired boy who everyone said was poised to become the next Gym Leader of Ecruteak.
Though Kana's schedule was hectic at times owing to her travels between Kanto and Johto, Morty and Eusine remained constants in her life; the trio of friends spent many hours biking all across Johto in search of the Legendary Dogs. Unfortunately, a couple glimpses of Suicune and Raikou were the only rewards for their efforts. Despite her burgeoning feelings for Morty, Kana continued to battle him and Eusine regularly; although she could often defeat Eusine, defeating her crush often proved significantly harder. The only thing she was able to beat Morty in was bike racing - Kana was undeniably faster than either boy, a fact that she loved flaunting as they sped around the Region.
Late Teen Years
By age 16, Kana had become Surge's top protege, and had begun both the Indigo and Johto League Gym Challenges. She was scheduled to challenge the seventh Gym in each League when unusual power outages across both Kanto and Johto put her journey on pause. While Kana - and most of both Regions - were sheltering in place, her father was enlisted as part of a team which tracked the sources down to a mysterious entity draining supermassive amounts of energy from the Kanto Power Plant. Rumor quickly spread that nothing other than a Legendary Pokemon could produce such an effect.
In Kana's eyes, this could be nothing other than destiny. With her head full of "Chosen One" stories from Morty and Eusine - as well as a stolid determination to prove she didn't need to be cautious to Lieutenant Surge - Kana set off for the Power Plant, certain that she was meant to form a bond with the Legendary Pokemon. When she reached the island that housed the Plant, she found the entire place had been evacuated for worker safety - and for good reason. A Pokemon, cloaked in plasma, was soaring through the skies, draining and discharging electricity at inordinate rates and even melting down the steel superstructures with the force of its blasts. Still, foolishly undeterred, Kana continued onward.
It didn't take long in battle for Kana to realize she was horrendously outclassed. Worse, it appeared other people had come to the Power Plant in a bid to become the Legendary Pokemon's Trainer as well. To Kana's surprise, these other Trainers unleashed their Pokemon - and then turned them on her directly. Gizmo, too busy holding off the Legendary Pokemon to help, watched as Kana was brutally attacked and left for dead. When the Trainers turned their attention to the Legendary Pokemon, Gizmo was able to finally stop worrying about keeping the being at bay, returning to Kana's side.
As soon as Gizmo saw the condition his Trainer was in, he didn't hesitate to enter Kana's Pokenav and call Lieutenant Surge and the police. When both arrived, Kana was still alive - but barely. Surge helped render emergency first aid, and helped two police officers transport her unconscious form off the Power Plant and to a proper Pokemon Center. Despite all efforts being made to investigate the situation, Interpol only found a small, flat hexagonal device, crushed on the ground near where Kana's body had lain; all evidence of the other Trainers - and the Legendary Pokemon - was gone.
Kana subsequently spent several months in convalescence, needing reparative surgery for her shoulder and arm, which had been speared by a Nidoking's horn. Surge, Morty, and Eusine visited her in the hospital frequently, and though the road was hard, Kana did eventually make a full recovery physically.
Mentally, howeer, Kana was scarred and completely unable to stomach the idea of a Pokemon Battle. All of her atempts to battle were fruitless and resulted only in panic and her voluntarily surrendering to her opponent. Ultimately, this led Kana to hand in her resignation as a Gym Trainer to Surge. The two parted for the last time on uncertain terms, neither completely sure what to say to the other anymore.
Upset and afraid, Kana visited the Power Plant one last time - and released all of her Pokemon there with the exception of Gizmo. She asked them to please use their strength to protect the other Electric-type Pokemon that made this island their home...and walked away from her most trusted companions and her life as a Pokemon Trainer for good.
Back home in Johto, Kana threw herself into the one thing she still loved doing: biking. She began competing in bike races on Cycle Road - and then she began winning them, too. Although she never knew it, Surge made sure to attend every race she competed in, cheering for his not-so-little-anymore-girl from the sidelines. Eventually, Kana's victories attracted the attention of Macro Cosmos in Galar, who offered to sponsor her as an official Rotom Rally Racer if she moved to Galar. At age 20, Kana accepted the offer and stepped into the next phase of her life.
