Pulao

"If you think I'm going to sit here and allow you to scare me, you got another thing coming! I'm no coward! I'm Pulao, the son of the Dragon King and the best damn dragon around! The second you try to touch me, I'll make sure you're seeing stars!"

Status

Every group needs a mascot. The mascot itself can be anything from a character, animal, or animate object. However, the mascot represents everything good and attractive about a product. The mascot itself also may act as a spokesman or a representative of what product/thing is. Now the Phantom Thieves of Heart does have a mascot. Well, a new one due to circumstances. This mascot is certainly not something as simple as a black cat. Oh no. They decided to be clever by using a dragon of all things.

...Now in fairness, the thieves didn't have much of a choice since the dragon refused to let them chose anything else besides him. The last they need is a grumpy dragon on their hands.

Here we have Pulao. Pulao is a Persona that wasn't created from the heart of another human. He was created from...somewhere. Unfortunately, it's unclear where exactly Pulao came from. All Pulao's adopted father knows (Adrian) is that a friend of his gifted the whelp to him when he was nothing more than an egg. It wasn't until Adrian forged a confidant with Akira that Pulao egg hatched. Pulao's creation is one of the few mysteries that Adrian and Akira are attempting to solve. After all, he had to come from something...right?

Appearance

Pulao takes the form of a Chinese dragon with red scales similar to a carp covering his body. His body is slightly long and slim much like a snake with a long, unruly (blue) mane similar to a lion covering the entirety of his neck. A line of fur runs from his mane down to the fur that decorated the end of his tail that bears the slight resemblance to a brush. His face resembles a combination of a camel and lizard with two horn-like protrusion on his head. His eyes are shown to be golden and small. Stemming from both sides of his head are two red fin-like ears with gray webbing in between of them. He has tiger-like paws with dark talons that is similar to that of an eagle. He has small barbel that dangles on both side of his cheeks that match the colors of his scales. His underbelly is covered in gray segmented scales.

Important Notes

  • Pulao can walk on all fours and all twos, making the male a facultative biped. He primarily walks on all fours.
  • Pulao ears are a good way to tell how the male's feelings. When the male ears perk up, he tends to be alarmed or excited. When his ears tend to hang low, he tends to be annoyed or sad.
    • As an addition to the above, the male's body behavior and habits are based on that of a cat's.
  • Pulaos' claws are sharp enough to pierce human skin, so it is highly recommended that you don't attempt to tick him off in some way. You would not appreciate having his claws digging into you.
  • Pulao eyes tend to glow purple whenever he's using a status ailment skills while his eyes tend to glow green whenever he's using healing skills.

Personality

Pulao can be best described as being a spoiled brat. He is prideful with a strong dislike for doing anything he considers to be lowly. This is to the point he refuses to stay in a poor environment for long periods and dislikes being in an area that he feels will make him dirty. That can be annoying as he has the role as a secondary healer. In his eyes, he feels that he shouldn't have to do anything since he has servants (the other Phantom Thieves) to do that. This spoiled attitude makes the male needy to the point that he will throw a fit if he doesn't get what he wants. On the other hand, Pulao is an intelligent Persona and is regarded to be very intuitive and observant with his ability to pick on the smallest things.

Pulao is often stern and suspects most people to follow his orders because of fact he's the son of the Dragon King and has two adopted parents leading the group. As you can guess, no one really pays attention to that. After all, while the male does supposedly present himself as a solemn and mature person, he can honestly be downright childish at times. His impulsive and easily irritated behavior has lead Pulao into getting his adopted parents into rather...unfortunate situations. It certainly doesn't help the male doesn't even acknowledge when he makes a mistake. It most likely has to do with that pride of his. It doesn't help that Pulao has an assertive personality, having no problems expressing how he feels loudly. Personally, Adrian likes to blame Akira in that regard. In response, Akira likes to blame Adrian for spoiling Pulao.

Pulao can often be competitive, a trait that his adopted parents often use to try to get him to do his job as a healer. He is unsatisfied with withdraws and refuses to quit until he is declared the winner. Well that or if his adopted parents tell him to stop. Due to Pulao's confidence, the male tends to overestimate his enemy's skills and think that he can never lose. It's something that Akira and Adrian have to warn him about seeing how he is not offensive Persona. Whenever he does lose, it's not shocking to see the male throw a fit.

⇀Likes and Dislikes↼

Likes
  • Food. Just because he doesn't have to eat doesn't mean he can't enjoy savoring whatever he can get his hands on.
  • Shiny things. Pulao eyes sparkle when he sees anything shiny. In fact, he has to take that shiny and keep it in his hoard.
  • Bells. He likes how nice they sound and often dreams of hanging off of them for some odd reason.
  • Stories. He loves reading (or listening) to them, especially if it's a mystery. His favorite stories are the tales of Sherlock Holmes.
Dislikes
  • Whales. The male will roar at anything resembles a whale and promptly hide in Akira's or Adrian's shirt. He is scared of them.
  • Being ignored. He's a bit of a spoiled brat and demands attention 24/7. It can be annoying.
  • Adrian/Akira in distress. While he won't admit it, he cares deeply for the point to the two that he will try his hardest to defend them even if he gets hurt.
  • Blood. The male hates being around it. That sucks for him, given his role as a status dealer and he's the secondary healer.

  • Pulao will 100% screech at anything that bears the resemblance to a whale. He can't stand being anywhere near them. He thinks they are worst than any of the shadows the group encounter.
  • Pulao will bite anyone that boops him. He hates being booped. Thankfully, a bite from him will not cause you to lose any limbs. It will just hurt quite a bit.
  • Pulao is often seen in Adrian's 'roster' as Akira tend to juggle several Persona at once.
    • Usually, Akira is seen with Pulao whenever Adrian is out of the main party or incapable in some way.
  • Pulao is often seen resting on Adrian's (or Akira's head) when he's summoned (or just rudely appears for no reason). He states he finds their hair to be quite comfortable to lay on.

Trivia

8601478_cM4zCjca6rNrgwC.png
  • The reasoning behind creating Pulao was due to wanting to create something that further connects Adrian to Akira and play with the concept of Wild Cards with Adrian partially having a power of one and Akira being a full one.
  • Originally, Pulao was going to have the power to take control of Adrian and Akira. However, this was changed as I did find this to be rather weird after some thinking.
  • Pulao design did take some inspirations from the same one from Chinese mythology. In fact, it is meant to be the same one in question. Choosing the colors of Pulao was a process that took several recolors to try to figure out which colors would work together.
  • Pulao's skills were easier to figure out (compared to Ku) due to understanding what I knew what was missing in the party and taking note of how he acted.
  • Yes. His canon voice is the same voice actor as Ciel from Black Butler. Yes, I do noticed the strange theme of Adrian, Ku and Ciel canon voice coming from Black Butler.

History of Pulao

Pulao was one of the Nine Sons of the Dragon King that is known to be quite small in size. He made such a racket with his booming voice that the people who lived near him complained that all he did was make monstrous noises all day. Alternatively, people claimed that he cried all day long. Upon hearing this report, the Dragon King designated Pulao to watch over all the bells in China to ensure their sound remained loud and true.

Pulao loved the oceans, and he remained alongside the sea at all times. He had a great fear of his archenemies, whales, and whenever one would attack Pulao, his roar would echo across the water. Some legends claim that Pulao had a roar that shook the earth and heavens. This roar is shown to be much louder whenever he's attacked by a whale, he keeps roaring. Thus, people put his image on bells and make the wooden striker into the shape of a whale. This is to supposedly get the loudest possible bell sound.

To this day, Pulao adorns the handles of bells. Due to this connection, Pulao is sometimes conflated with Qiuniu. In China, almost every large bell is decorated with the figure of Pulao, meaning the sound of the bell is loud and resounds over long distances.
