dedicated . hard working . stubborn

A dogged and enthusiastic young man chasing a dream beyond his life on the family farm, Amir al-Abbas wishes for nothing more than to make his way to the big leagues - of olympic running - while supporting his family. Of course, those wishes sometimes clash, especially when his family (while loving, and likely better than some at the 'care' thing) aren't all perfect themselves.

Personality.

Stop I'm literally just gonna paste this from his doc.

Overall, Amir’s a pretty energetic guy! Not the kind where he rambles on for ages about topics nonstop, or the kind that seems like a battery all on their own, but the sort where he usually has a grin on his face and a reason to come up to you and chatter- like an overgrown, shaggy, mountain dog. Almost. He has a pretty big heart and likes to help people out, even if it’s in the smallest of ways! He’ll do it with a grin on his face and a bounce in his step. He’s a bit of stubborn guy, too. When he truly sets his mind on something, he’ll go to lengths to achieve it. Even if he’s knocked down at every step, he’ll bounce back up and get to it soon after!

Additionally, he’s not the brightest bulb in the box. It takes him a while to really screw his head around concepts that are new to him, and oftentimes he’ll need clarification to really get what was meant to be understood. If he notices the person getting frustrated, he’ll usually try and make do with what he has, even if that results in a bad job.

Amir’s not the best under pressure. He tries real hard to hold himself together, but if he has to do this for too long he gets very jumpy and fritzed out. This tends to happen most when things spiral out of his control and just won’t stop. He’s very much a realist leaning towards pessimism, though most people peg him as an optimist. This is because he likes to act like he believes everything will be great in the end, even if that’s far against what he believes, and by god is he good at it. Sometimes he even fools himself.

Trivia.

  • He has a baby brother who he loves dearly! Both of them have terrible taste in naming their animals, though currently, his brother's 'Ovary' name for their rooster is still holding first place.
  • His favourite food is... well, any kind of meat, and his favourite drink is milk tea or gatorade (the blue one). He's also a pretty hefty kool-aid fan.
  • Amir's ethnicity is pretty mixed, but considering his family mainly lived in the UAE for a few generations, he defaults to just explaining it 'Arab'.
  • While he speaks mainly Japanese (school and general social life), Amir also knows certain languages used exclusively to talk to relatives of his that don't live in Japan. He's a little rusty in some, but he does his best when they're around!

Background.

traits

Dogged and loyal to a fault. Responsable. Slightly naive, but a fast adapter. Quick to stand up for others when nobody else will. Not very academically minded (himbo).

ideology

Always wants to give people chances, even if he feels begrudging about it; the fact that no matter the person, there will always be good to them.

weaknesses

Puts himself in harms way without thinking. Forgets he isn't invulnerable. Forgets his own strength. Magically unadept.

meaningful locations

The loft above the cow stall. It's piled with hay, kept dry from the rain by a tarp under the roof, and remains his go-to spot for relaxing. The middle of the forest's clearing comes close, though.

treasured possessions

A shark tooth that his brother found him when they were kids. A pair of old, crumbling earrings from his grandma. A small pile of stones his baby brother glued together for him.

phobias & manias

Hoplophobia. Dromomania. Taphophobia. Gamomania (THIS ONE'S A JOKE).

One scar under each eye. Pattern of scars along entire torso and arms, as well as around legs. Giant, jagged scar in his front-middle chest.

animal names

Riot (dog!), Havarti (Cow), Piccolo (Goat), Rickardo (Cow), Bird (for a horse), Horse (for the child of said horse), Bobble (Pig)

History.

Amir al-Abbas was born into a lower middle class family some date past. His older brother doted on him, his parents thought him their little prince, and overall he was raised into a pretty good life. His parents had a farm he used to frequently wander out into as a kid, hiding and falling asleep between the animals. They tended to keep him warm and safe while his parents and brother were busy at work. He remembers those years only vaguely; most of that time is warm lights and snippets of laughter to him. When he got a little older, he began to help run errands with his brother- and literally run them he did, often racing his brother to the town and back. His brother was a little lazy, and usually only ran fast enough to keep Amir in sight. Dae thought he was the fastest kid in the world because of this, and began to challenge other kids to races in the town.

(Of course, he wasn’t really. Dae lost a bunch of times, but his brother was usually there to encourage him and pick him back up, and then so were his parents back home. His brother would buy him soft serve and whisper to not let their parents know, and they'd walk home covered in sugar and sweat, and everything was bliss.)

Most of his early life went by like that. His parents had a few financial issues they hid from the kids, and his mother was adamant on giving them the best life she could, so neither of them knew what was happening when they were moved away from their farm for a little with their mom, nor why they were left in the city with their grandparents for a few years, only told that the farm needed some work.

Time went by. Amir’s brother and his parents began to get in more and more arguments. They’d never gotten along, especially his father and him, but it got progressively worse, especially after they were finally made to move back. Eventually Malik moved out, and Amir was the one helping around the farm. He got well versed with the town again, figured out some gender stuff, wrote letters to his brother in the city that grew less and less frequent. Eventually, his brother stopped responding altogether. It hurt, and he saw the looks on his parents’ faces when Malik was brought up. He let him slip away, little by little.

(Sometime in between then, Mir began to take up track more seriously- he had seen olympic runners in all their glory when the Olympics came to Japan, and the young boy was immediately starstruck by the entire concept. And so, he practiced- and practiced- and began to win more frequently, enough that his town friends were barely a challenge anymore. He begged his parents to let him apply to a sports school when he was older, and they responded vaguely positively. Of course, that was before-)

He came home one day to a slew of paperwork and a group of men in the kitchen and was shooed upstairs by his parents. About a week of legal stuff ensued after that, in which he found out through eavesdropping and arguments at the table that his brother had stolen money from his family's books, and they were now in pretty deep debt, one that didn't fade for years. His parents worked on the legal side of things while Amir was drawn along, eventually having to make excuses at school to work at the store and farm while his mother worked overtime to make ends meet. They did eventually dig their way out of the red, but it ruined what little connection with Malik they had left- at least on their parents’ end. Amir felt similarly betrayed.

(He spent the summer after making up for the absences he had to take. It was an exhausting year- he did get an interview for his ideal school however, due to numerous reccomendations from all the jobs he worked and a stellar interview with the coach.)

He eventually got a sports scholarship into a very prestigious school– one that was way too expensive with only his grades. After a long family conversation, his parents agreed he could pursue running and attend the school if he managed to keep his grades up and worked a few jobs to make up for the gap his scholarship didn’t cover. He still applied for financial aid when he could, eventually. His parents were never told, mainly due to their stubborn pride.

He got in, and immediately beelined for the track team. His grades took effort to keep up, but it took almost no time for him to become the fastest runner there, except for… this guy named Lyre. Someone who never showed up to meets but the coach kept in because every time they got into a competition, the guy would show up and ace it for them. Despite that, whenever he showed up, he always hung out around the fringes. Most of the team had apparently once tried to talk with him, but got blocked out.

Amir started to notice him more in classes, in meets, all around. He was jealous, at first– that much money made it easy for the guy to not have to work hard at all, an unfair advantage that he could never even hope to have– but he was also curious. Especially with how little Lyre seemed to care about what he had.

His grandmother had always told him to only judge people by their third chances.

So he started to talk with Lyre. And- against all odds, the more time he spent with the guy, the more he found himself... liking him. Seeing the parts of him that were usually hidden from the rest of the team. The process of pushing his way into level ten friendship in Lyre's books was by NO means easy, something hed easily attest to, but-

(Seeing him actually laugh one day, head thrown back and fangs flashing- Mir felt his chest constrict painfully. Only then did he realize- just how deep in over his head he had gone.)

And he ran, and he worked, and he befriended and laughed and grew, as a person and as a brother, and the farm began to grow again, years after its fall. And... it was good. It really, was...

Around the end of that final year, years after his scam, his brother showed up again. Amir and his father were the only ones around. He’s not sure what the argument was about– all he remembers is hiding out in the back deck as his brother is shoved outside and both sides yell at him, and screaming and a flash of metal and… he rushed out, and then a gunshot, and then…

Nothing. (He had died.)

He woke up in the city hospital with marks all over his body, and was told by his parents that he’d been out for a week. (Something had changed.)

Nothing was ever explained to him. All he was told was that something bad happened that day and that the farm needed repairs just like dae did. His assumption around the situation became that he had been attacked by a demon, and with the markings lightly scarring over there was no real reason to believe otherwise.

(He felt odd.)

Spoilers He’d been reincarnated by his brother, using a dragon’s heart in place of his own. His brother was well practiced in magic like necromancy, and was also the person who had fired the gun, originally intending to only hit his father's leg. Unfortunately, his little brother ran out at the worst possible time, and with his speed and height- well, it got him right in the heart.

But... luckily, his life didn't just end there. In fact, his baby brother came a few months after that, much to the happiness of the town and his parents. Amir treated him like his brother had once treated him.

Eventually, his brother began to reach out again. Amir ignored him at first, but after a ton of missed messages and read but not responded to emails, he caved. The two began to keep in contact over email, although it remained distant and cordial on Amir’s side and a little awkward and apologetic on Malik’s.

Somehow, miraculously, dae graduated at some point, getting accepted into a college. Aiming for a degree in law as a backup and a spot in the Olympics otherwise, he continued to run in competitions and the like. The college was in the city, but he’d make sure to come back and help when he could in the store.

Oh yeah, he got an internship at a law office, though it’s only in the summer. Otherwise, he’s usually in classes or out of them and training with the people that took him on for his acceptance into the national team. It's... a backup of a backup, in a way. He loves his dream, but- there's times when he worries, too. Eventually, though, he's gonna have to make a decision...

Mir really isn't sure who this guy used to belong to- only that he's his, now, and he's kinda gotta deal with it if he ever wants to use the guy in any useful manner. (Only applicable for AU)

Malik al-Abbas
Older Brother; Mob Member, Yakuza; 30

His brother… Their relationship is a little odd. His brother fucked over the company he was in and then stole from his dad and was essentially kicked out of the family. While he wasn’t disavowed, there’s an unspoken familial rule to never bring up his name. Amir’s still hurt by what he did to the family, but has been one of the few that Malik reached out to after, and the only one he seems interested in repairing a relationship with. He does genuinely care for his baby brother, even if said baby brother will vehemently refuse his help in his chosen career.

Mohsin al-Abbas
Abbu; Farmer, Baker; 54

His dad… A hardworking man who believes that everything you get is only earned through fair and hard work. Built his business by hand from the ground up and still fights corporations head to head to keep it going. Amir and him have a good relationship, and his dad is very proud and supportive of him. Amir’s side of the relationship is a little strained, but only because his dad refuses to talk about his brother- he loves his dad a lot, though.

Ayesha al-Abbas
Mama; Lawyer, Baker; 52

His mom. She fusses over Amir a lot, though she’s more laid back than his father. She’s always gotten the best she could for him, from clothes to education, and pushes him to pursue the best future for himself. Is very tentative about Amir’s chosen career, but won’t stop him as long as he proves himself fit for it.

Bilal al-Abbas
Younger Brother; Grade Schooler, Soon to be firefighter; 9

His little brother who he loves with all his heart. He’s a bit of a loser, like most kids his age are, but Amir tends to manage to communicate with him a lot better than his parents do— probably because he’s much better at acting childish than they are. These two are close! Bilal doesn’t really know much about Malik, only the little Amir has told him in shushed voices.

Lyre Nishida
(Best?) Friend; DJ, Utaite; Variant Age

A weird friend of his he met in early high school. The guy was in the track team yet rarely showed up for practices, and never seemed to really care about classes or those teams, but still managed to excel in both. It kind of pissed Amir off, but in a way that made him curious too— so one day when he did show up at the track meet, he decided to talk with him and struck up a challenge: One day, he was going to become a better runner than Lyre, and beat him when he shows up the race after. One thing led to another, and they eventually became fast friends, what with Amir refusing to be deterred from talking to him and Lyre kinda giving up on it after some time. They’re still in close touch, and Amir would probably do anything for him if asked. He’s… a close friend, after all. (Loser is pining LOL. It’s unrequited obv)
