synapse is from a reality far more fluid and less physical than our own. xe is not there now. xe's stranded on (an) earth and has no idea how to get home, or even where home is, from here. xe stole a random person's body to avoid disintegrating and assumed her life and identity. xe's been living as taylor cross for the last several years. taylor is effectively comatose under synapse's control, with no awareness of what it's doing with his body beyond brief, dream-like flickers. synapse has acclimated to "being human", but he still considers it an unfortunate circumstances that xe just has to tolerate. if he could leave, he would.

he's kind of an ass - yknow, aside from the massive ethical issue of stealing someone's body and identity. he doesn't really talk to people and tends to be chilly and sullen. he lives not all that far from the dockyard where he found taylor, repairing boats and otherwise generally keeping to himself. he spends a lot of time near the ocean. it makes him feel at home.

ix ends up "moving in" with sunbird because ghostworld is safe for ix to exist in unsheltered.
