Item #: SCP-288

Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-288 is contained within a three-room Secure Humanoid Containment Cell, fully furnished with an adjoining bathroom and medical workshop. Subject is allowed to freely wander the facility, eat in the canteen, and interact with researchers as long as the tracking device on its tail is functional. SCP-288 is also permitted to enter the Medical Department to assist with cases that involve non-memetic or non-cognitohazardous sources of affliction or injury, although it must be monitored by a minimum of two accompanying personnel during any procedures it attempts. Lethal violence should be avoided when attempting to contain SCP-288.

Description: SCP-288 resembles a quadruped mammallian creature that does not strongly resemble a specific non-anomalous animal, although studies of its internal anatomy have revealed strong resemblances to reptilians and certain species of shark. It has a coat of thick fur and an unusual tail that is furless and skinless, which greatly resembles the tail bones of a ray-finned Salmonidae fish. Despite its dead appearance, the tail is prehensile and SCP-288 retains full sensation in the exposed bone. SCP-288 is capable of both quadrupedal and bipedal locomotion, although it seems to greatly prefer the former. On four legs, it stands approximately two feet tall at the shoulder.

SCP-288 wears two articles of clothing that have been in its possession since its discovery: a red bandana and a hood that resembles a dead fish with cartoon-like "X's" for eyes. These items seem to hold great sentimental value to SCP-288, which expresses intense dismay when the items are removed from its posession. Nevertheless, both articles of clothing should be washed at least once a week. SCP-288 may be allowed to supervise the washing process if it requests.

SCP-288 possesses the ability of human speech. It appears to speak through anomalous or supernatural means, as its language is universally comprehensible. Tests carried out have revealed that SCP-288 was able to speak to multiple monolingual D-Class Personnel who did not share a common language, but were all able to understand its words and even reported noticing similar speech patterns. Additionally, all D-Class Personnel and researchers reported that SCP-288 appeared to speak the language that they were most familiar with, even when others in the vicinity reported hearing a different language. Noticeably, this property does not carry over to recordings of SCP-288's voice and speech, which appear to sound like [DATA EXPUNGED.]

SCP-288 refers to itself as "Sawbones" or "The Sawbones." It has a rather nervous disposition and is generally friendly when approached, although it remains noticeably anxious or even afraid during conversation. It is naturally helpful and seems to enjoy assisting with small tasks around the facility. Most notably, it possesses a detailed knowledge of human anatomy, illnesses, and practical medical knowledge, comparable to that of an average ER surgeon. Despite its professed anxiety while witnessing injury or illness, SCP-288 seems to feel a strong compulsion to assist with both routine and emergency medical procedures.

In addition to its unusual appearance and speech abilities, SCP-288 has an additional anomalous property that appears to activate in response to significant injury, illness, or debillitation. Upon its death, SCP-288's corpse immediately dissolves into a liquid that chemical analyses have revealed to be a particularly strong-smelling fish oil. Additionally, within 24 hours, a single medical practitioner in a seemingly random location on Earth spontaneously undergoes a physical and mental mutation that transforms them into a new instance of SCP-288. Newly created instances of SCP-288 seem to retain the memories and personality of previous iterations. There also appears to be no geographical limit to where new instances of SCP-288 can spawn, posing a significant difficulty to containment. SCP-288 itself seems to express a simultaneous distaste and embarassment towards its experienced deaths, often greeting Mobile Task Forces with "sorry for all the trouble."
