  • to preface: while North has a long history with many of these people (sometimes over decades), it is hard to say that they feel close to any of them, at least emotionally. No matter how pleasant the relationship, North thinks of it only rarely and fleetingly once they've passed on, in the midst of things to be done. They simply don't get attached on the level that others do, though this is rarely obvious given that north doesn't usually verbally express their true emotions. as such, they prefer entertaining company on their own terms, or failing that being with people who can easily keep up with their line of thought.

Relationships

Dexter is North's self-proclaimed rival-slash-enemy, and perhaps their most notable acquaintance. While their relationship is somewhat agonistic at the best of times, there's no bad blood between them; Dexter grudgingly admires North and the sheer scale of their influence, while North has treated Dexter with their trademark courtesy ever since they successfully diverted his attention from abducting FMNetwork members for his own purposes and stopped seeing him as an active threat. The romantically inclined may sense a deeper undercurrent in their interactions, for all that North seems immune to Dexter's leering.

Theo admires North, but in the beginning she often felt awkward around them, wondering if her presence was unwanted because they never seemed to express much enthusiasm or emotions at all - when she arrived, they would reassure her that she was welcome, but they were always quick to return to work. As Theo started to know them better, she realised that was because they felt comfortable enough to let down their guard around her, and over time she stopped feeling worried about overstepping her boundaries in favor of being concerned about how they never seemed to take care of themselves.

Timeline

1985: First encounter with Rome

A year after the creation of the FMNetwork, North took it upon themselves to visit their old mentor's impressive list of acquaintances to convince them to help with the project. One of these FMNs was a recent immigrant from Germany, a hitman and part-time gangster. North's mentor warned them that the man was dangerous, but they went regardless. At any rate, they never made it to him: Rome had ensconced himself in the belly of the criminal underworld, and North was captured and brought to the leaders, who only determined that they were not there to join them before throwing them out. They were kicked and stomped to unconsciousness and thrown into a cell, where they might have rotted away had Rome not returned from a assignment that night and heard that someone had been looking for him. When he saw North lying in the cell, he immediately knew them for a FMN. Despite his antipathy for his kind, he felt pity for the battered youth and snuck them out, leaving them in a hotel room with some money and a note warning them to stay away.

1989: First (of many) rendezvous with Theo

"But who is North? Could I meet them?" Theo had asked, that first night, and the two FMNs who'd introduced themselves as Noemi and Ginny had looked at each other. "Sorry," Noemi said as Ginny shrugged, "They don't like visitors much - we don't get to talk to them that often either," she'd added quickly when Theo's face fell, "- and we've known them since the beginning. We can get you in touch if you want?" Yes, she would like that, and the topic passed. She soon forgot that she'd asked, until she recieved a plain white envelope a month later. Inside, in slanted blue letters, the simple words: If you wish to see me, please send this message back with your arrival date at your earliest convenience. Theo replied swiftly, her curiosity reignited at the thought of meeting the person who had thought of bringing so many FMNs together, but her courage almost failed her once she was at their door; she felt very small, suddenly, under the dusky light falling on the expensive-looking houses around her. But she had come so far. Theo took a deep breath and knocked.

2001: First meeting with Dexter

They had known of each other long before they actually met. Not long after his rebirth, Dexter had the idea to use other FMNs as his lieutenants; he snatched several newly-turned FMNs straight off the streets and immediately began to train them with the goal of making them utterly loyal to him. One, however, escaped, and evaded him for months until he finally tracked her down to the house of a member of the FMNetwork, where he first learned of its existence. Intrigued and a little irritated that someone else had already realised his idea of gathering FMNs, Dexter sought the mastermind of the entire enterprise. At the same time, North was looking for a potentially dangerous individual, a white-haired FMN with not one but both wings deformed, which none of the FMNetwork members had heard of before. They met in a blind alleyway, Dexter's hand on the girl's nape and his gun pointed straight at North. Unfazed, they calmly asked him to let her go in exchange for information on the FMNetwork; intrigued by their cool demeanor, he agreed. Dexter questioned them for half an hour before he had to leave to deal with gang business - when he returned, North and all of the FMN trainees were gone. Enraged, Dexter swore to track North down whatever the cost, a declaration that would mark the cat-and-mouse game that would consume them both for the next three years.
