Merle Béchalot
chivalrous . brave . impulsive
Merle Béchalot is a member of the Byranian royal guard, now based in the sleepy capital of Numsa. His livelihood is trained and funded by the neighboring state of Nafelar. He is textbook young knight; too big for his boots, easily distracted by a pretty face but ultimately serves his country to the death.
The knight can be found on the outposts on the edges of Numsa laughing with his batallion, or perhaps traipsing around the many markets in the mountain town with spicy food in hand, or even wooing fair maidens (or gentlemen!) with his dazzling smile. He is a show-off, and at times a little hot-headed, but his heart is always in the right place. He strongly belives that a knight should be willing to lay down their life for their country and should not, under any circumstances, shy away from the fray. However, when he is not serving Byrania's garrison, Merle can be found in the library brushing up on the old pantheon of gods.

Personality
BRAVE
Merle is not one to shy away from a threat as he strongly believes it is his duty to serve and protect Byrania. He faces danger head on regardless of the threat, with the rationale that if he fails then good, innocent people will die.
CHIVALROUS
He strongly believes in the chivalric code and follows it near daily; humility, gratitude, courage, justice, generosity, discipline, faith, equality, love and death. He may, of course, put more emphasis on love than he does the others and this does not go unnoticed by his peers.
GOOD-NATURED
Merle is a good person at heart and generally friendly to all that he meets. He maintains relationships wherever he goes, i.e. checks on the child he rescued from the forest one night a week after the fact, donates goods to the beggars and the poor, sits and makes daisy chains with the fae-- wait, what?
IMPULSIVE
He has been known to act out of turn if an idea suddenly comes to him - i.e. turning his horse onto another route if he believes it will be quicker. This can sometimes put him and his peers in more battles than necessary. It also means he has the tendency to give in to what he wants without considering the consequences.
HOT-TEMPERED
Merle has a short fuse - he isn't necessarily violent but he can bark his orders out of line or curtly respond to his superiors. He is easily frustrated by incompetency, whether that be from his peers or himself. He knows this isn't very 'knightly' of him, and makes a special effort not to yell at women.
COMPETITIVE
Merle is competitive and is highly motivated by the thought of winning. During his training day he strived to be the best in everything - sword fighting, horse riding, agility - and took it hard whenever he didn't come first. Fortunately his competitive streak keeps him on his toes and always strives to be the best.

About
Merle Béchalot, born to a Kurzasarkian mother and Byranian father in Loimattoi in southern Byrania, is now a proud member of the Byranian garrison. He is now stationed in Numsa, the capital of Byrania, in a position that he has trained his entire life for. Merle considers himself an ideal knight, the epitome of chivalry and knighthood. He does not think much of the ongoing Nafelarian and Vyshinian dispute; only that if war were to break out, then he would not leave Byrania for safer lands but rather stay and defend the smaller state.
He is the eldest of three children. The youngest child, his brother Velor, aspires to be like Merle in every way and practically begs to play with his sword every time he returns to his childhood home. The middle child, his sister Elora, cares little for his chivalrous path in life but takes a vague interest in what life is like in Numsa. Merle eagerly shares his tales with them, with some embellishments here and there, of course.

- He loves animals and takes very good care of his horse. He also has a labrador at the family home that he loves dearly.
- Merle is the eldest of three children and endeavours to contribute to making Byrania safer for them.
- He believes there is no greater honour than to become a Holy Knight for the state of Byrania; it's his life goal.
- Hails from the city of Loimattoi in south east Byrania, his mother is Kurzasarkian and his father is Byranian.
- Prefers spicy food and prides himself in being able to make a delicious spiced chicken casserole and a tumerric bread.
- Occasionally visits the library on his days off where he reads about the old pantheon of Byranian gods.
