Shenji used to be a crime boss that traded resources / protection for information. He was a powerful figurehead back in the day, despite being more of a loner of sorts when it came to his line of business. He also wore an oni mask to protect his face from the public eye, as well as wearing his tail like a sash.
But there are those he dealt with that did indeed call him by his alias Monkey King. Knowing him for his ruthlessness, cunning and overall trickster persona. He dealt with a lotta big heads which is why his persona stuck out so much because of how lax and mischievous he was despite his business. But he was feared for his merciless anger, maybe his gang got messed up at one point by a big head and a story goes that in a single night their whole syndicate was massacred.
Him being the touch heartless boss he was, he eventually got tired of fighting and retired elsewhere. Only to realize how alone he truly was in the world did he find Fang, a lone stitchpup one day.
He ended up getting her a new body made, custom ordered from an old friend, in order to look more akin to him.
It wasn't until he did such a thing, did he realize just how fucked they both were in a city as devious as the one they were in. So, taking what resources he could, Shenji moved away from the city, taking to an underground watershed instead and donning the name King.
