A wolf in sheep's clothing, or a angel in demon's clothing, both phrases would be fitting for the life John had lived. A remarkable, dedicated, and loving father of two and a founding member of the last remaining Craitist church of Stuttgart, Johnathan is well known as the funny, kind, and caring - albeit a bit immature and academically stupid - dad friend to any and everyone. Few, however, could so much as even imagine the roots of his past - a secret kept from even his own children and known to only the three closest to him.

Selectively bred like cattle by religious extremists and occultists seeking out the power and 'True Heir to Cain' with the hopes of deicide, Johnathan Martyr Kaine was one of the many potential descendants of Cain - bred in hopes of not only finding true descendants and inheritors of The Curse, but also to find the best suitable candidate and potential host for a freed Lucia (Lucifer) by bloodshed between offspring. Showing great skill and dedication to the cause at a young age, Johnathan had been selected as and branded as Candidate #9 - killing the previous Marked Heir and taking the position as the Cult's Current Favorite and Potential True Heir - that is as long as he could defend the title. Most of Johnathan's memory of this time is a large blur of survival, blood, worship, survival and more blood, all ending with a raid from Bishop Franz of the Vatican that shut the American Branch's activity down, freeing John for the first time as he slipped away among the chaos.

A troubled early adolescence of running around and committing petty crime to avoid cops, CPS, and missionaries ensued as he sought out a way to change his name, fueled by a vile hatred of himself, his past, and his history he came from. Three years on the run being chased by Bishop Franz, he gave in, listening for once and solely in exchange for the ability to change his name, Johnathan - now Johnthan William Ross - followed the bishop back to the Vatican. There, he befriended his then and forever best friend Enzo Renaud as the two - in a traumatized teenage angst - began to set fire and chaos to the streets and sewers of the Vatican.

A patient and understanding father figure like Bishop Franz, a warm and forgiving Pope that wanted to make amends for the damage dealt by extremists, and an intelligent, independent and Bad-Boy-loving refined teenaged girl put together and worn over several years created the space that John and Enzo needed to turn a new leaf. Given a new and patient family that neither of them had, John had seen a potential peace, a world he never thought about, and at that moment, decided and dedicated himself to achieving it.

Over the years, putting his full effort and intent into building and leading a normal life, leaving his past as behind him as a secret to his grave and following his then girlfriend Maribelle's advice, John pulled a strong 'fake it till you make it' development rapidly finding himself the well loved high quality church going citizen he became well known for. Ignoring ongoing C-PTSD and the expected struggles of adapting to a safe life, his life had become a relative bliss until the birth of his first son and the onset of the apocolypse.

Facing the apocolypse, John was forced to rely on his unfortunately honed childhood skills and put in a place where - for the better good and safety of those he cared for - he had to expose his past to his wife and those he needed to protect. Over two years he stood as the primary force protecting the Vatican refugees and survivors from beasts - loosing many on the way, but gaining the respect of those that did live and survive - eventually finding haven in Stuttgart. Taking the opportunity to return to the normal peace he desperately wanted to maintain, credit for their survival was passed entirely to his combat partner Bishop Franz as John slipped back into the shadows of society as "just a dad" - those knowing of his secret agreeing to take it to their graves to protect the peace he defended.

He is an EXTREMELY dedicated family man, and extremely doting father. He credit's Maribelle and Franz for opening the door to a new life and giving him the opportunity for a new life, but he credits his children for giving him a second wind, a genuine purpose and meaning, and an overall life. Largely he let himself die to make sure that at least Aiden could have a chance of living a relatively normal life. Additionally he excessively has hid most of the knowledge about the curse from people and his children as to prevent them being targetted or hunted or ostracized for the bloodline most would be unwilling to accept.

He largely struggles until his death bed in a pull between his anxiety and comfort in high stress traumatic environments and his strong need / draw / compulsion to respond to stressful and potential threats with often over the top war-like behavior. He often goes no further though then considering it and bringing it up with his wife, who - knowing him and his history for so many years - is skilled at slapping him out of his stupid. While he is an amazing person and an amazing father, he very much still deeply struggles with deep rooted C-PTSD and related anxieties from his past, he is just very good at hiding it

Additionally, hes a good bullshitter and is chronically laid back around people. He has told many outlandish stories about his past to explain his "tattoos" and markings on his body, most sounding unbelievable and it has thus then been accepted as just "Johns immature personality". Very little he says is can be taken entirely serious and literal.

Fun Fact: He is really fucking bad at math due to his upbringing, like below first grade, enough so that if he ever goes to the market to get food for the family, he often brings Aiden to keep him from getting scammed.
