Clothing Style

Nelly's favorite pattern is horizontal stripes, and she tends to wear striped tops with either pants or a skirt with long boots. When out and about, she often wears a long gray jacket and a gray beret. She doesn't care much for accessorizing or wearing anything that might get in the way of her work. She'll wear gloves for certain work, and she'll tie her hair and loose clothing back so it won't get caught in anything. Nelly tends to choose more earthy colors and isn't a fan of bright or excessively light colors, especially since in her work her clothes tend to get dirty easily anyway. She prefers practicality over aesthetic, and although she still makes an effort to look presentable to others, she won't wear delicate materials or anything uncomfortable. She's not too picky about style in general, but she'll tend to cover most of her skin while working for safety and only wears things like skirts or shorter sleeves when she's off the clock.

Personality

Nelly is a headstrong and rather stubborn woman who is determined to achieve her goals no matter the challenge. In her setting, women tend to be underestimated and not valued equally to men, so she is very much a low key feminist that strives to prove she can outperform any man in her work field. She's meticulous with her work, focused, and has a rather sharp tongue and sassy retort for anyone that gets in her way. Although she's capable of cooperating and being a "good girl" toward her superiors or people that could get her in trouble for not staying in line, she'll do whatever she likes when left to her own devices. It's obvious she's pretty passive aggressive about her gripes with her authority figures, but in general she tends to be rather curt with her speech and tends to end conversations as quickly as she can so she can get back to her own work or goals. Her sister may call her a bit of a workaholic, and Nelly tends to be on the move rather frequently when she's not working on something. For this reason, Nelly doesn't come off as a very personable people and is rather rough around the edges, but she's more reasonable to get along with if you treat her with respect and acknowledge her skills.

Backstory

Nelly works as an assistant to an engineer working with steam powered technology. However, this engineer is rather incompetent with his work, and he tends to take credit for the work she does to keep things running, mostly because few people saw value in or believed that a woman could do such work in that time period. Nelly wants to make it on her own, but her younger sister, Lynnette, often discourages her against such dreams since no one would likely give her a chance with it being against the social norm. For the time being, Nelly continues her work while gathering her resources and preparing to relocate and start her business independently when she finds the right opportunity.
