Deyna is a maze-runner with a side interest in ancient history, and so can often be found with the archeologists in the ruins. If he can't be found in a dig, then he's running a maze. Because the topaz region has the most ruins by far, Deyna only runs the mazes in that region. Due to his experience and steadfast personality, he's usually the go-to for running maze-runner trainees through their first maze. Its a job he takes seriously, as he's lost many friends over the years to his chosen profession. Deyna also has a habit of nudging trainees who realize maze-running isn't for them to archeology; many individuals want to become maze-runners for the adventure and discovery, and in Deyna's opinion archeology is much the same. He has a strict but caring personality, and to his bemusement is a magnet for kids. It's something well joked about with his maze-runner and archeology colleagues alike.

Later on in the story, Deyna is participating in a dig site out in the topaz region where an elaborate burial tomb had been discovered. A tomb that seemed to have undiscovered information about the blight inscribed upon its walls. Unfortunately, the building they found wasn't a tomb, but a sealing site - the place where Queen Yverre had been imprisoned upon her defeat in the ancient past. They accidentally broke the seal, waking Yverre, who proceeded to murder her way out of the place and fly free. She left no survivors behind save Deyna, and only then because she thought she'd killed him. Deyna survived, albeit heavily scarred, and participated in the fight against the Mother of Blight. Due to his background in archeology and heavy research done out of guilt after accidentally releasing Yverre, he found the spell The Architects used to seal Yverre in oracle crystal, and cast it with Hayden in order to reseal the Mother of Blight at the cost of their lives.

Trivia

• Deyna is slightly hydrophobic, which contributes to his decision to stay in the topaz region, though he won't admit it.
• Deyna and Hayden are actually pen pals, which is how he contacted Hayden about the whole 'Yverre is free and it's my fault' thing and got his help and support in resealing her. And whacked upside the head, because Hayden's practical like that and Deyna needed to focus on fixing the problem rather than beating himself up about it.
