The Last Queen of Her Line

About

In the ancient past, Yverre was obsessed with eternal beauty and immortality. She did many horrible things in pursuit of that goal, and was widely known as one of the most bloody and callous queens in history. Eventually, when Yverre exhausted all rituals and spells known to man, she turned to unearthing more estoric secrets, desperate to rule forever. And in an ancient, crumbling tome, she found it: the spell that would change the kingdom of Abelanth forever. The reagents were dark and terrible, requiring the deaths of many. But the final ingredient was an oracle crystal, which at the time were priceless treasures held by religious orders and lords alike. Yverre massacred an entire monestary for their crystal, and used their bodies as sacrifices for her ritual. However, when she finished her preperations, and cast her final spell, the oracle crystal's very nature rejected it, twisting it up and blasting it back at Yverre. She had her immortality, all right. But it came at a cost: her very soul, for this twisted magic was none other than the blight itself.

Driven insane by the twisted magics that had taken root in her body, Yverre sought to blanket the entire kingdom in her blight, keeping it under her control for eternity. Obviously, people fought back, and even though she was struck down by Bryne and her friends again and again, she just kept getting back up. She couldn't die, and gloated about that fact. But just because you can't die doesn't mean you can't be trapped; they had learned about the shielding effect oracle crystals had on the blight, and using spells now lost to time, they killed Yverre in order to weaken her, and then imprisoned her within a giant oracle crystal. And in there she lay, trapped, until the day Deyna and his archeological expedition accidentally set her free. In the short time she was free in the modern era, she wrecked absolute havoc upon the kingdom, murdering King Chyre and taking the royal palace for herself (as the one she'd had had long since crumbled to dust). Lute and his friends managed to seal her away again, but as she gloated to them, it didn't matter that they won this time. She couldn't die; sooner or later, there would come a time when they failed to seal her away, and then she would win.

Unfortunately for her, just because a way to kill her hadn't been discovered didn't mean that it wasn't out there. A pair of alchemists named Avis and Freja were able to discover an alchemical mixture that, when coated on a shard of oracle crystal, was actually capable of stabbing and killing the blight itself. It was forged into a dagger, which Lute took down to where Yverre was sealed and broke said seal. Yverre barely had time to move before he stabbed her, and while she started gloating, she froze in horror when she realized the blight was actually shriveling up and dying within her. Yverre died not with a bang, but with a whimper, crumbling into ash and dust once the twisted magics keeping her alive were destroyed.

Trivia

  • While the modern era has forgotten how Yverre unleashed the blight into the world, what they do know is that she was the very first creature to be corrupted by it.
  • The original royal palace of Abelanth was Prism Palace. It was named for the multitude of beautiful, stained glass murals inside it, though the majority of those ended up smashed in the Battle of Prism Palace.
  • One of the stained glass murals has actually survived into the modern day. It depicts a group of all species gathered together on a grassy hill and roaring at the sun. Hilariously enough, this fact has been completely forgotten, and it's believed that the mural was commissioned by Queen Bryne rather than one of the previous sabertooth royalty.

Ahahahaha! You can't kill me! One of these days, whether it takes a thousand years or twenty, you little traitors will fail, and I will be free to take back what was stolen from me!
