Adam "A.J." Rehnquist is a rising star among lawyers in New York. After an astounding college career, he went straight to work and has found natural success. He is a temperate man and rather humble for his position; aside from his work, he doesn't like to stand out. When he isn't having meetings with friends and colleagues, he can often be found in his office reading or working.

A.J. comes off as a very austere, serious man with a respect to formality. His seriousness causes him to be somewhat self-denying, relying on his close friends to remind him to live a little. A.J. is rather humble, but that's not to say he has no ambition or desire to be the best. He is prone to throwing himself into his work, and it is often unclear whether it is a way to avoid dealing with internal conflict or simply hard work. It is frequently more or less a depressive episode, with him keeping all of his struggles close to his chest or ignoring them altogether. He is very guarded and paranoid about fitting in (to the point where he won't even write with his left hand in public). This concern gives him a very strong sense of restraint. He can be a commanding presence if he wishes, but he generally saves it for the courtroom, preferring focus to be on him only when he needs it.
Likeable
With such a good understanding of formality, A.J. makes a good impression. His desire to fit in can make him so plain or malleable that he can get along with anyone.
Insecure
Despite outward appearances, A.J. is extremely insecure and paranoid about conformity. He is constantly ill at ease and always struggling with himself.
Sober
A.J. is a very serious person, always thinking and erring on the practical side. He's outwardly calm (if serious) and of a clear head—on any subject that isn't himself, that is.
Restrained
A.J. is restrained, waiting for the right moments to say the right things. It's a double-edged sword, however, as he rarely takes time to enjoy life.

By late 1816, A.J. was in an established relationship with Emmett. One evening, they went to Emmett's room in the Bailey Estate near New York City while Emmett's family was elsewhere. To the pair's surprise, Senator Bailey returned from Albany early, only to discover them in a compromising position, to say the least. A.J. immediately left, terrified of what Senator Bailey's discovery could do to his reputation. Eventually, he received word from Senator Bailey that Emmett was being sent out west, and A.J.'s secret was safe—as long as he would always be willing to yield to the senator.
After the incident with the Baileys, A.J. essentially cut himself off from Emmett, hoping to dispell any possibility of a rumor or further issues. He put his reputation and standing first, and has drowned himself in his work since. He misses Emmett deeply and is in somewhat more emotional turmoil than usual. As Emmett goes west, A.J. remains in New York, working as always.

A.J. and Emmett have known each other since law school, where A.J. was a year ahead. They became friends, and as A.J. became more well-known, Emmett was happy to help him navigate social functions. They relatively recently became a couple in a real case of opposites attracting. After Emmett's father discovered their relationship, A.J. has completely cut himself off from Emmett for fear of their relationship going public. Now unable to contact Emmett while he's in Montana, A.J. is worried sick.
Who is this stranger and why has A.J. caught him eyeing him from across the room? A.J. doesn't know Ulysses, but he has seen him once or twice.
