Rat surprises most people when they find out he's a knight rather than a common crook or a sell-sword. His manners and language are crude, and he's got no chivalry. He's got a bad reputation all across the kingdom, and he can't help but play it up even more to instill fear and disgust in people. It's like a game to him. 

Rat talks big, but he's quite a private person. He hates being asked personal questions because he doesn't feel the need to justify himself or his actions. Everyone already has their own opinion about him and his past. Their minds are made up, and Rat feels he can't change anyone's mind. So instead, he acts proud of the stories and rumors that people whisper about as he passes by. If he's asked a personal question, or something about his eye, or his family, that's his breaking point and he'll pick a fight with that person. 

To have Rat's respect is a rare thing. He despises authority figures like the king, but he believes fully in his lord that he's pledged himself to. Sir Giroldan. One reason why Rat respects Giroldan is because Giroldan trusts Rat to make his own decisions and to make his own calls to do what he thinks is the right course for a given situation. Rat has proved himself many times on the battlefield, and he doesn't need to argue his case to Giroldan. Rat was given his own troop to lead. Rat is not only strong, but he's not afraid to question authority, and not many of Rat's men question his authority, so he doesn't respect them much in return either, but he is amused by his men who travel with him and fight under him. Rat will always be grateful to Giroldan for giving him a chance and keeping him around despite everything. 

As a knight, Rat experiences many advantages and privileges. He carries around a letter from his lord to prove that he is who he says he is, and he also believes that this letter gives him the right to do what he sees fit when he sees fit. He basically uses it as a pardon and protection by Giroldan, and he enjoys abusing this power too much.

Rat is a good fighter, but his technical skills are sloppy. It's clear that he was never trained officially by a knight and also clear that he was never a squire. He's not from the Capital City, but he doesn't say where he is from. But he seems to be familiar with the Kingdom and the lands beyond as well. Despite not liking the king, Rat still serves the king to help him achieve his goals for the kingdom. The kingdom has served him well, and the kingdom's enemies have been his enemies for a long time now.

Many years ago, Rat was cursed due to a series of unfortunate events in his past, and this experience created his hate and distrust of magic. He was cursed to die off of the battlefield, which is a grave dishonor as a knight. On the battlefield, he often wears no armor, however, he will often be seen in armor while travelling and sometimes even while sleeping. He's searching for a way to break this curse, and is determined to survive.
