Percy used to be the best of his class, the best of his university. He had everything for a stellar career, including a bit of a very grey moral compass. Yet it still wasn't enough: between saving a life and success, he still decided to save a life. He did many bad things in his life, but killing an innocent child was a bit too far even for him. So he ran away with his life experiment: a wee """"frog"""" made out of the souls of the dead, that ended up becoming sapient. He hid in a small town, protected by anonymity, and made himself important, as important as a small town could manage, by becoming a professor in the Garnet's Witching School. He tries to lay low, but he knows it's only a moment away from being uncovered by his crimes and for running with such a precious experiment. Experiment that he called Dune and adopted as his son.
