Miguel got into a lot of trouble in his youth, perhaps out of necessity, but in the past few years he's worked hard to turn around and make an honest living. He travels between a few towns, doing odd labor jobs. He also participates in boxing matches that aren't 100% above the board, but not illegal either, and does quite well. Miguel knows how people see him, but deep down he's pretty sensitive, and he gets pretty hurt when people make nasty assumptions about him.
The main reason he wanted to shape up was suddenly becoming a single father to his two children, after his girlfriend died. Miguel doesn't talk much about his kids to others in his life, wanting to leave them out of his own drama. The only exception is Methuselah, whom he trusts completely. In fact, in the years since his girlfriend's death, he's gotten quite close to Methuselah.
